There are just too many games in the NBA. You can't compare sports when one has 82 regular season games and the other 16 (ok I just learned it is now 17 games). NFL teams also have 400 players, in the NBA you have 15 players per team, only 8-12 play each game, and 2 or 3 at most are key players, so you have a few guys earning a lot of money. Financially the league is clearly doing well enough to be able to keep paying these stupid salaries but I think it's definitely the easiest gig compared to other sports.
Teams like the Lakers know they can coast through the season, squeeze into the playoffs, and if it all comes together they have a chance of winning the whole thing.
Then you have the tanking teams, which is just a joke, but a necessary evil because of the format. Until someone comes up with something better it is what it is. The nature of American sports means the focus is on the end of season.
I don't think you can really be criticising Lebron either, and I'm hardly a huge fan. He is 40 years old now so is obviously going to have to manage games.
