Crouch for United

Manchester United are desperate for a striker, having scored three goals in their last nine games. Really desperate.

So desperate, in fact, that they could be ready to offer Liverpool a swap deal with Gabriel Heinze unloading his kit into Peter Crouch's locker at Anfield, while United physios go online to order an extra large treatment table.

If the physios fail, United will instead match Obafemi Martins' £13m release clause, with the diminutive Nigerian somersaulting his way out of Newcastle.

Bolton are resigned to losing Nicolas Anelka after Le Sulk went public with his desire to find a better club at the weekend.

At the moment 'a better club' means Portsmouth or West Ham - which is not good news for Bolton fans - although Manchester United might just weigh in with a late bid.

Middlesbrough striker Yakubu has missed training on Tuesday. Given that his proposed move to Everton broke down late last week, it's anyone's guess who the possible suitor is (West Ham).

Meanwhile, Heerenveen are about to sign striker Paulo Henrique from Atletico Mineiro, which can only mean one thing - they are preparing to sell the highly-rated Afonso Alves to Boro. Or something.

Kasper Schmeichel has earned some rave reviews for his trio of clean sheets for Manchester City this season, but Sven-Goran Eriksson is not convinced (rightly, Transfer Talk would venture).

He will press on with the £7.5m signing of Marco Amelia from Livorno, whose president Aldo Spinelli says City have easily outbid Lazio.

City are also after another striker with Valeri Bojinov ruled out until the New Year with a cruciate knee injury. Brazil international Fred seems like a reasonable shot in the dark after he said he wants to leave French champions Lyon.

Yesterday Transfer Talk mentioned clubs who use the August 31 transfer deadline to test-drive their sides in the early season then make late additions.

Step right up Billy Davies, who is believed to be on the trail of David Nugent after correctly identifying that Steve Howard is not a Premiership-quality striker.

'Nuge' has only just arrived at Portsmouth, but wheeler-dealer Harry Redknapp will sell the 21-year-old if it will fund a move for Anelka.

Continuing our theme of ending on something that isn't really a transfer - Newcastle owner Mike Ashley is reportedly willing to sell the club just months after taking over.

He has had his fancy tickled by interest from Icelandic businessman Jon Asgeir Johanneson whose asset include - oh joy! - frozen food retailer Iceland.

They will maybe sign someone.Ronney is injured and they sold Smith.
They certainly lack a real striker. Saha is the only one they have and he is injury prone.

as good as Tevez is, they should have bought a real CF to play with Rooney cos he and Tevez are too similar to play well together I think.
