Newcastle Close To £12m Modric
According to the English press, Luka Modric is on the verge of completing a move to the Premier League. But while he's been continually linked with the Big Four, it appears Newcastle United may swoop in first.

Zdravko Mamic, vice-chairman of Modric's current club Dinamo Zagreb, reportedly jetted into Tyneside on Tuesday afternoon and met Magpies officials in a city centre hotel to discuss the transfer with Newcastle's technical director Dennis Wise.

A source close to the player confirmed that Modric will definitely quit Dinamo after Euro 2008, with the Magpies appearing to be the surprise winners in the race for his signature.

“Mamic came back to Croatia and insisted that Luca is close to moving to Newcastle," he said. “He always talked about Spain but Portsmouth’s Croatian star Niko Kranjcar has told him to move to England. The money Newcastle are offering is fantastic.”

I dont believe for a second that firstly Modric would be interested in Newcastle & secondly that Dinamo Zagreb would sell him for a measely 12mil to Newcastle when some of Europe's top clubs are after him including Barca & Arsenal

the only way he could end up in Newcastle is if they offer 30mil. because Mamic is one greedy bastard and he will sell him to a highest bidder

I would be interested to know if we have made a serious effort to sign him.

I would have preferred him to Mellberg if we were choosing between free defenders.

So would, although melberg is yet to play serie A i think the general consensus is that Ujfalusi is superior at CB which i think is a fair comment.. I have a sneaky decision we might be interested in him as i remember him saying "If you Juve really wants a player, they will get him" in regards to to some other player that was linked with us.. Not forgetting Secco's love of off-contract players so who knows
