Bayern Withdraw Lahm Contract
Bayern Munich have sensationally withdrawn the contract offer made to German international full back Philipp Lahm, raising speculation that he will be leaving the club in the summer.
The Bavarian giants have been unable to come to an agreement with Lahm over a contract extension. A statement released on the club’s official website reads: “The talks between Bayern and Philipp Lahm about an early extension to his contract have not led to an agreement.
“The record champions therefore on Tuesday withdrew their original offer.”
Bayern look set to sell Lahm in the summer for a large fee to prevent him leaving on a free transfer next summer when his current contract expires.
Fresh from the German Cup win on Saturday, Lahm has admitted in an interview with Stern, that it is “very possible” that he will be quitting the Allianz Arena.
“I stand by my decision; my career plan allows that I will leave Bayern at some point, and not only when I have passed my peak” he explained.
“I played for two years at Stuttgart and I am now in my third year of playing for Bayern, the best team in Germany. Therefore it is the logical next step to move abroad.”
The talented full back has cited his desire to win the Champions League as one of the major motivations for his wanting to leave.
“There are a handful of teams who have more financial clout than the Bavarian giants.
“These teams play with yet more tempo and security” Lahm added. “And for every professional the biggest motivation is to win titles - above all the Champions League.
“The bigger the club, the greater the probability that you will win it.
“I don't believe that we will be able to make it to the Champions League final in 2009” he added.
Lahm has also stressed that incoming coach Jürgen Klinsmann will not be able to convince him to remain at Bayern. “I won't make a decision dependent on the question of the coach.”
Now that's a great fullback to hunt.
