First of all don't be so defensive. This is just a conversation.

Real respect is something earned. If you respect everyone for no reason then respect ceases to matter and the system breaks down.
What do you mean defensive ?

Look man, it's really that simple, respect everyone if they respect you. If I see some guy in the street, sure, I'd respect him. If he starts fucking around with me, the respect fades away. It's human nature, and you get angry.

And there's no such thing as "real respect" first of all. Were all human beings and we all fuck up.

"Why shouldn't I ? Tell me why I shouldn't". Comes off as a little defensive.

Anyway, fucking up really has nothing to do with it. Some people are for lack of a better term assholes. Assholes don't deserve respect and I'm not going to give it to just anyone. At the same time I'm not going be disrespectful to them, it's common courtesy. I think we may agree a bit not that you've explained.

Now if you wanna go starting the "respect doesn't exist" argument that's fine but you're on your own because goes down a long and dreary road of philosophical b/s that ends up with nothing existing and mankind merely a figment of some giant's dream.:D

Probably respect does exists, but we don't use it. I've to agree with Aaron and Seven: you don't respect a guy who walks down the street (probably we don't even care about this guy, is just another guy walking down the street). Then we can suppose if the guy insults us or try to rob us we are not respecting this guy anymore, why? probably because he is not showing respect to us. I've met several people that say they respect everyone because they are "human beings". You earn respect, nothing comes for free

So you're saying that respect exists, but we don't use it, because we don't care about it at first sight, then you go on the negative side because he or she fucked up, and you stop respecting him or her because he or she did something "fucked up" to you.

That's basically what I said but in a different way. Aaron is right, it becomes more internal and has a lot to do with philosophy in the long run which I don't wana talk about cause I'm half drunk.

So you're both saying that you use respect (or a lack of) as a means of labelling or judging an individual, even though we don't go around acting in a respectful manner?

EDIT: Nevermind. I've missed the mark, boys.

But Aaron, let's not forget the topic on mind. It's about respecting other people's religion (including Atheism) and what not. As usual, Seven made us go off-topic again.

There is a lot of things that exist but we ignore. Btw, I wasn't discussing your point.
And i'm not going on a negative side, i'm just giving for variables of what could happen, which is almost everything. I just gave few examples. I mean, if somebody punch you in the face you are not going to wait for the second one, right? So run/fight/cry whatever pops in your mind at that
moment.
And how can I believe you if you are half drunk? :D

e: actually i was agree with you on some points you made

I know right, human nature at it's finest. Every action has a reaction. But now I know what Seven and Aaron meant, but how much respect can one earn to be fully respected ? What is fully respected ? Know what I mean ?

And you can make a lot of sense if you are half drunk ;)

I respect religion and some of the people who worship.

At the same time, if people are annoyingly religious it kind of looses it's "realness" and I tend to respect them less because they seem to be fake.

Then I'm happy to say we're on the same page.

1. Ohhh, got your point. In first place we need to know why respect is(which I think we already did), in second place we have to define the types of respect and then how you show/earn respect or if it's free, inherent to the human being.
I hate to go to relativism but depends of the person and the reason of the respect. When you discuss with someone (you and me, for example) and he gives you good arguments and show to be a good "contender" (I hate to use that word) somehow you earn respect. You much respect you can receive? no fucking idea. That why I say it depends of the person. When someone is an expert in some thing (like american literature, for example) you "respect" his opinion about something. You don't doubt most of the time of what he's saying, because, at the end, he is an expert. We can say that kind of respect is earned by the rank (his tittle) he has. Of course, if our expert start to talk bullshit (and you realize he is talking bullshit), you are start to lose respect of him. Even (and I'm sorry to put God back in game again) some people thinks that all religion is based on fear, and that fear comes with respect. If there is something bigger than you, that knows all you do, all you've done, all you think, what will happen with you in the future, that can kill you just thinking it... of course you start to respect him! you don't want he gets mad with you. So you believe... and so on. No need to say what comes next. We can say the same about monarchy, the people respected to the king (even when their fear him and/or hate him) because he could do whatever he wanted because of his rank.

2. I know what you mean, just kidding. Been there, done that :D

3. Wish we could still discussing about this (discussing not "you're a dumbass, fuck you"). This is getting interesting

Yeah, I'm afraid this is where the broader vision of philosophical respect comes into play which I really don't wana discuss since we all get the point now :D
