South American WCQ: Argentina Penalized By Ronaldo's Spot-Kick Hattrick
06/02/2004. Ronaldo scored four times from the spot, although only three counted, to lead Brazil to a 3-1 win over Argentina in Belo Horizonte. The victory moves Brazil to the top of the South American qualification table after six rounds of qualifiers. Argentina slipped to second place.
Ronaldinho's absence did little to slow down Brazil at Mineirao stadium as the Auriverde went into halftime with a 1-0 lead. Ronaldo created the first goal when Gabriel Heinze brought him down in the area at the quarter-hour mark. The Real Madrid striker stroked the penalty past goalkeeper Pablo Cavallero, but the Colombian referee Oscar Ruiz called two Brazilians for infringing upon the penalty box before the kick was taken. Ronaldo was forced to retake the penalty, and this time when he slipped the ball into the back of the net the goal stood.
Argentina, meantime, played a good first half and produced more shots than the host country. But the visitors had nothing to show for it except a goal called back for an out-of-bounds corner kick and an acrobatic Juan Pablo Sorin shot that flashed over the bar from a shade beyond six yards.
In the second half Ronaldo took his qualification goal total to five in the 68th minute after being brought down in the area for the second time. The aggressor on this occasion was 19-year old debutante Javier Mascherano. Once again Ronaldo made Cavallero look foolish from twelve yards.
The Albiceleste pulled one back in the 80th minute through the energetic Sorin. He pounced on a loose ball after Brazilian 'keeper Dida pushed a Hernan Crespo header off of the post.
Sorin's goal gave Marcelo Bielsa's men renewed hope but the equalizer never came. Heinze flashed a header over the goal, and substitute Javier Saviola saw his late attempt devoured by Dida.
To add insult to injury Ronaldo and Brazil secured the three points with a third goal in injury time. This goal, remarkably, also came from the penalty spot. Again Ronaldo was the victim of foul play, but whereas the first two penalties were legit this one was not without controversy. Still, the 2002 Golden Boot winner took his qualifying tally to six with another calm stroke of the ball from the spot.
