Can anyone remind me how Juve´s formation was when Zidane was in the team? I think it would be also good if juve tries to play that way again with Diego playing in the same role and having the same freedom zidane had.

The problem is with Diego in that free role is,if the opponents manage to shut him off we are very limited can you really shut of Diego and Gio?. I think not. I fear 2 men on Diego all the time.

Jack, were Zambrotta and Pessotto moving up as well in that formation ? Did Lippi play them as pure wingers or would they come down sometimes ?
That was the formation during Ancelotti's regime. Under Lippi it was similar with Deschamps and Di Livio playing.

Zambro and Pessotto acted as wing-backs who would take care of the flanks by themselves. They'd attack and come back to defend, so they'd be running all the time.

Under Lippi, in Zidane's first season, we had something like 5 lines. 3 defenders in one line, Deschamps in the second line, Di Livio and Pessotto in the third line (these two running up and down), Jugovic and Zidane in the 4th line and Del Piero-Vieri in the 5th line.
But these guys ran like they were doped. It was unbelievable how much space all of them covered, especially the wingbacks and Jugovic.

5 lines ? Isn't there so much space for the opposition to take control of the game ?

:seven:

Don't say those words, it's a secret.

But nah that was one hell of a team. Glad to see us finally get a true playmaker replacement for Zizou.

Now that we got Diego I think Juve's formation will usually be 4-3-3
Where would Diego play in that? Free role up top?

Well, on the pitch it didn't look like it
We always had at least 4 at the back, at least 4 in midfield, at least 2 in attack. We were running man, we were running like crazy. :D

i don't see it that way....a 4-3-1-2 would be more realistic.
thats what i ment really. i just figured 2 strikers and an attacking mid is a 3 man offense and we would have a 3 man mid.

but yeah

Another good thing is that once the team gets used to this formation we will not need to switch to 442 anymore because even without Diego we have Giovinco to come in and play in his natural position as Trequartista or Play in Del Piero's position if he is unavailable. This way we can keep the same system and Giovinco will get lots of playing time in both positions.

Del Piero/Giovicno----Amauri/Iaquinta
--------------Diego/Giovinco-----------

I did not put Trez in cuz I am not sure whats going ot happen with him over the summer. but if he stays we will be that much better.

 sad to see the lethargy in our attacking nowadays isn't it?

aye probably why we were not so successful under carlo

Buffon

RB - Cannavaro - Chiellini - Criscito

Camoranesi - Sissoko - Marchisio

Diego

Amauri - Del Piero
i like it, but we could possibly be betetr served with a diamond in there, with Amauri's strength and Del Piero's craft we will certainly be able to bring diego into the game but i feel we will require some extra width with the overlapping runners otherwise teams may be able to shut up shop in the middle and strangle our attacking options
