Gigi Buffon saved three penalties in this evening’s Confederations Cup shootout with Uruguay to seal third spot for the Azzurri in Brazil.
Italy were pegged back twice in an entertaining 90 minutes, with Edinson Cavani’s double responding to efforts from Davide Astori and Alessandro Diamanti.
With both sides still level after a tightly-contested extra-time period, the game went to a penalty shootout, prompting Buffon to draw on all his experience and expertise to deny Diego Forlan, Walter Gargano and Bianconeri team-mate Martin Caceres from the spot.
Buffon joined Giorgio Chiellini in playing the full 120 minutes, while Leonardo Bonucci and Emanuele Giaccherini were introduced as late substitutes.
Giaccherini followed Alberto Aquilani and Stephan El Shaarawy in converting from 12 yards as Italy went on to claim a 3-2 victory on spot kicks.
