I agree with the first part of your post. As for the bold part, I think that what we need the most in midfield are talent, and most of all brains/intelligence.
Someone who can control the tempo, distribute balls left, right and forward, create a lot of chances and read the opponents' game and intercept their passes.

Just check this out. All 4 seasons of Pjanic and Pirlo and the last season of our current midfielders. Look at all the red for 2021/22 midfielders (the worst 5 stats are in red, the best 3 in green).

We definitely don't need the current Pjanic, but a Pjanic of the old days would do wonders. Locatelli isn't there yet. Not even close as a matter of fact.
Or Sassuolo's Locatelli. His stats is really great on all of those things while he in Sass
- someone who can control the tempo
- distribute balls left, right and forward
- create a lot of chances
- read the opponents' game and intercept their passes.

If Sass' noob coach can make him do that, then our legendary coach should give him 2x boost improvement

what LBs are out there that could be had? sell Pellegrini if we’re stuck with Sandro but there’s gotta be someone better than those two.
This is not a serious suggestion, but if we want a backup for CHEAP ($4M, less than $1M salary) who will lock down the left side of the pitch and bomb up the field (but put in inaccurate and shitty crosses), I have a player for your in MLS. He's already played against top level players in international competition (i.e. Salah in AFCON), and shut them down thoroughly. Physically he is more of a beast than anyone we have in our squad IMO. You would just have to accept that he is a defender, not an attacker. Also very good in the left side of a back three.

I hoped nobody would respond, because they will only yell at me for suggesting someone who is not up to our level (and he isn't). The player is Nouhou, a Cameroonian LB/LCB. A physically dominating player and has gone from being a meme (bicycle kick clearances, lunging two-footed challenges, aggressive and outrageous slide tackles - basically, Bruno Alves with pace) to a shorter, meaner, faster Chiellini-style player. NOT as good as Georgio (heavy emphasis on this), just that he is very difficult to play against and he gets away with a lot and is physically stronger than his opponents.

Pjanic is physically finished. There is nothing high reward in that move. This midfield requires some grinta and muscle and you are suggesting Pjanic. Pretty baffling.
Pirlo was as physically finished as Pjanic is when Pirlo joined us, if we can get him on loan on a 3-4m salary imo thats a good bet, who's to say Mire doesn't have a couple more years in him? I'd like a midfield of Pogba, Locatelli, Zakaria, McKennie, Fagioli, Miretti and Pjanic. Barca have no use for him, they're overloaded in mid.
