let me rephrase it for you. he's averaging 1,5 tackles and less than 1 interceptions per games, it's not what i'd call vidal or even pogba level of defensive contribution. if you combine these stats, that's less than pjanic - not exactly a dm either - is capable of. for an am, he defends okay-ish.

or probably he isn't. he's a very, very talented prospect. splash out 150m for him and hope that he can handle the pressure, and be consistent for the next 2 seasons before he asks to leave and $#@!s off to madrid. he's no prime vidal, no prime modric either. he'd be gamble worth to take at around 50-60m, but for 150m... that's almost neymar and mbappe territory, and those guys will be the best attacking players for the next 10 years. to put it into perspective, liverpool bought a very, very capable midfield duo of for less than that (and for more or less the same if you include salaries, too), and english clubs are usually overpaying for players.

before somebody twists this around: i'd be happy if we could get him, but the rumored asking price is just insane. if thiago is really available around 60, i'd pick him against a 150m rated sms.
Lets put Vidal aside as Vidal is on a different level to both when it comes to defending...
I am amazed to find out that SMS numbers are lower than Pogba`s BUT numbers are not everything as I guess there are other midfielders who have SMS stats (goals/assists) but there is no CM LCM RCM at his level (Serie A)
Luis Alberto have great stats but he isnt really comparable to SMS.. Luis Alberto is a great player BTW

Exactly!

What did I just read?
Overrated?! Maybe its an opinion based thing but to say he isnt defending at all makes me wonder if you watch more than 2 or 3 games of his..
SMS is probably the most complete midfielder in the world...
I'm a SMS fanboy, but he's nowhere near that :D. This season, I see he improved some aspects of his game, but still need much more to become one the best. He's worth more to us because his strength fit us like a glove, but if he is at Real now, he will be the same as Kovacic to them, a different solurion from the bench.

on Tuz you either "most complete" or "can't defend", no middle ground possible
Dude plays in front of two defensive CMs, quite obvious his tackles/shmuckles stats are going to be lame

to be accurate, he plays in front of two cm's like pogba played in front of pirlo and vidal. for most of the season, lazio played a 3-5-2/3-5-1-1, with sms being one of the cm's. his relatively weaker defensive contribution might be due to parolo and lucas leiva doing most of the dirty job.

anyway, academic discussion as he's not likely to arrive.

What does he lack (not what he isnt the best in the world at but what are his weaknesses?)
He has flair, creativity, vision but need to improve his passing and decision making. I've seen him misplaced pass continuously, always try the hard pass and lose the ball, get him some highlights, but to play for a top club, he needs to be better.

He has aerial presence, technical but he's slow, acceleration to be accurate. He find it difficult when plays his back to goal, when plays against quick, strong players. His tackle is good, but when he plays more advance role, he often can't turn and catch up opponents.

Finally, his stamina is average, you can see him walk around at 80-90 mins.

So... In your opinion - Should we pay for him?
