It can't be an obligation without a clause wherein he will feature in a certain number of matches, in which case it's fair to both sides. Who says it can't be an obligation without a clause? Is that how the obligation works? I assumed that the loan + obligation was just a way to spread the payment or defer it.

No, I mean in this particular case where the buyer anyway has a concern on the physical fitness of the player. They would definitely insert a clause linked to appearances to protect their interests.
