my University is very informal. Eating and drinking and and casual wear is allowed in classes. I have never been in a class that did not allow us to eat or drink. We can even eat and drink in the library. Only place where we can't eat or drink is in the computer labs (even then people ignore that and bring food and drinks)

I've had one professor who did not mind being adressed by his first name. The rest of them however never gave an indication that they would like/dislike that. So I just refer to them as professor

My school was actually a mix of informal and formal. At NYU Stern, we had dress codes. They were not strictly enforced or anything like that. You were expected to be dressed business casual and girls were preferred to wear skirts and whatnot. About 75% of the students followed dress codes.That was about the only thing we had formal at our school.

Professors and students are very informal depending on how you are with them. I call the majority of my professors by first name.I'm friends on facebook with them. One of my professors used to even leave comments on my facebook photos making jokes about my partying habits. With some of my professors, I go out to coffee with them regularly. I treat them as if they were friends of our family. Professors take more of a mentoring/friendly approach with teaching. My professors actually always invite the students out to the bars after midterms and finals. I have drank with about 80% of my professors. We have our capstone course which is very difficult and about 30% of students fail it on the first try. When I passed that with an A, my professor invited me out to drinks wth his wife.I also invited my faculty adviser to my grad party as well as the big Italian dinner my grandma cooked for me. Its a very laid back relationship if you want it to be. I think you learn more and try harder when you know the professor on such a personal level at least I know it worked for me. Its important to be like that with your professors at least at NYU because thats how most of the graduating seniors get their jobs.

Everyone eats in class as well. I see people eating dinner in class regularly. I had one kid who constantly brought in Indian food which is not something you should eat in a classroom since it smells.

So I think its pretty informal here in the USA and I like it that way. I wouldn't have had as much as I did in college that way.

in our college/school. there is a teacher called mr Punter who teaches economics. hes quite nice and down to earth and has done sets at ministry of sound and stuff. but he got made redundant i think from hsbc and when he came to our school to teach i think he thought it would be a walk in the park. but our scholl, well its kinda very shit and lots of troublemakers. so pretty much every lesson is a p[iss take of him really, which is unfair but he has a really funny voice so that adds to it. usually consisting of people chucking chicken nuggets around the class and people yelling; 'PUNTA' in the loudest and weirdest way possible.

It is quite formal in Belgium. In Italy professors are very serious about their title and you always have to adress them that way. Eating in the aula or being late don't matter at all. First time I went to class it said I had to be there at 1 pm so I was there at 1 pm. 20 minutes later everyone else showed up.

I went to a private school in the South for two years and found out very quickly that you're supposed to address your professors by their credentials. On the first day I called a professor with two doctorates Ms. and was quickly reminded to call her doctor. So I address my professors as either Doctor "So and So" or Professor "So and So". A simple glance at the syllabus usually provides his or her credentials.

I have some classes where you aren't allowed in if you're more that 5 minutes late and you can't eat or drink either. Then I have classes where the professor doesn't care. In the states, the formalness of post secondary education is left in the hands of the institution/professor. That said, I don't care either way. I don't eat in class because I think it's distracting and rude. Nor do I just get up and leave for the same reason. But I don't care if others do, unless its really distracting, because they are only wasting their own money. I do however usually have some sort of beverage on hand.

Very informal at the business school i attended, eat/drink whatever you want, lots of people would come in late or leave early. Attendence was optional(although you'll probably fail if you never go to class). Some professors were assholes but most of them weren't bothered with the casual attitude. On most days there were tons of sorority chicks wearing pajamas and most of the guys were hung over from drinking the night before. Pretty standard stuff really.

Dropout in modern american culture usually refers to somebody leaving college due to grades/money/lazyness... Gates left because he had to many orders for software and was making so much money... it's not like he dropped out of college, it was more like, he didn't need college.
