Drunk, naked and record-setting
A troublesome Finn who was arrested causing a disturbance on a Bergen bus on Wednesday turned out to be one of Norway's most annoying characters.

The man, who was arrested drunk and naked on a bus on Wednesday has apparently been fined 99 times and has yet to pay one.

If police are correct, the unruly Finn is known under five different identities, all of which have lengthy records of public disturbance, newspaper Bergens Tidende reports.

Full article here.

Fairly random story, but I've read stuff about young Finns having a bad name in neighbouring countries, so it got me wondering, how does your country view its neighbours? What kind of steriotypes have you of them?

Ireland has an odd relationship with England. Some people still hate the country with a nationalistic fervour I detest. Others are mostly ambivalent, but the image of the average Briton seems to be either the drunken yob or the reserved and repressed types John Cleese sends up so well.

We have a rivalry with Germany of course. We tend to see them as strict figures, always on time, always punctual, who are incapable of losening up and having fun. I think in turn, they see us as weet-smoking, cheese-eating randoms who can't do anything right except live beneath sea level

This is expressed in football as well; we play for the sake of playing (thus believe football should be attractive, attacking), they play to win (thus not caring much how). This contradiction will fuel our rivalry for eternity I think.

As far as I know, none in particular. There just aren't a whole lot of Finns in this country, if they move here they're integrated enough not to stand out anyway. I haven't heard any Finnish stereotypes but anything present in Finnish behavior can probably be traced to a Norwegian equivalent anyway.

What about the Swedes? Anyone else Norway interacts with.

@Erik: What about Belgium, Luxemburg, France, England? :eyepatch:

the rivalry and sometimes outright hatred the scots and english have is pretty pathetic,in all honesty most scots are pretty agressively anti-english yet most can count an englishman/woman as a friend as there are many english in scotland and many many scots in england. the general concensus in scotland is that we have been screwed over continually in favour of the english which is wrong, its london who screw over the rest of the nation and the NE of england gets shafted as much as we do

Oh, lets talk about mexican stereotypes, yeah. They're ridiculously offensive, hardly true of the people overall, (well some of them are true) :D
In the US, Mexicans are often portrayed as having illegal immigrant families, 17 to a room, who take all these great-paying jobs that Americans would otherwise love to have :rolleyes2 and who syphon off billions of taxpayer dollars in government services :rolleyes2 :rolleyes2 :rolleyes2.

To many immigrant Mexicans, Americans are basically fat, lazy, overfed, and overpaid bastards.

As for Canadians? They're like cute mini-Americans in plaid flannel shirts who wear beavers on their heads. And who have free drugs and health care ... and play money for currency.

To many "visiting" Canadians (many are defiantly not "immigrants" and don't want citizenship), Americans are basically fat, lazy, overfed, and overpaid bastards. With guns. Lots and lots of guns.

There's a little truth in each of these stereotypes, of course, but also far more lies and mistruths.

I can't count the number of times I've heard of beaches in San Diego being closed because of something oozing up from the shore just south of the Tijuana border. :lazy:

we're fairly respectful and diplomatic with our neighbours. We find Thailand a bit amusing (but are unhappy with the whole south thailand issue because after all they are more malaysianized than thai), we're respectful to singapore although we're competitive and secretly dislikes them, and we love indonesia even though we actually are uncomfortable with their construction workers here.

French are arrogant and chauvinist. They think they're the best in the world for everything they do. WC '98 and Euro 2000 were very painful. We got sick of the millions of et un, et deux, et trois zéro....

A nice joke about the french:
When God created France, he was in a day of great inspiration. He made sunny beaches, the highest mountains, the greenest grass for cows to deliver their best milk to make cheese, the finet soil for vineyards, etc etc...
Once he finished, he reallised that the neighbours would be envious of France, and that he should level things.
And then God decided to create the french...

The Dutch are the cheapest folks on earth. When they come and visit us (and they do, you should go in the Ardennes in the summer, it's full of them), they usually don't spend a single penny in your country. Oh yes, they pay a camping place. They come with their caravan (trailer) and bring everything with them: food&drink, bikes, anything they might need. And instead of eating their sandwiches outside, they'll try to eat it on a table, and not even order a glass of water...

Luxemburg: they work in banks. they're boring

Germans: They like order and big beers. They have a tendency to like uniforms. They're blond. and rich.

    (no offence, dear neighbours)
