Research by Italian consumer study group Adiconsum has suggested that the results of 157 Serie A games were changed by refereeing mistakes last season.
The investigation was undertaken in the wake of the Calciopoli scandal with the aim of ascertaining to what extent refereeing errors can be fairly labelled as intentional bias.
It emerged that 41% of games last term were influenced by officials, and that Chievo would not have been relegated were it not for wrong decisions made by referees.
The findings are set to intensify the debate over the use of technology in football and will be used as ammunition by those who want to see video technology brought into the game.
“The data doesn’t lie,” President of Adiconsum Paolo Landi claimed. “If technology allows us to prevent mistakes, standing in its way means covering up for those with secret agendas.”
