Despite AC Milan winning the Champions League, England leapfrogged Italy in the UEFA country coefficient rankings for European clubs, while Spain maintained the top spot. Romania were the biggest winners as they jumped three places, while Greece sank seven in an all-change listing for the next season...

UEFA's club coefficient rankings for each country have been decided based on last season's continental results, with these seedings set to decide how many places each country gets in the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Cup.

As expected, England, Italy and Spain comprise the top three, the Spaniards coming out on top and England narrowly jumping ahead of the Italians, although each of the two receives the same number of places for continental competition.

Then come France, Germany and Portugal with healthy allocations each, and then the last of the nations to receive guaranteed Champions League places.

And the big winner here is Romania, who jumped ahead of the Netherlands and down-seven Greece to gain a further two UEFA Cup spots and a great chance at automatic Champions League qualification.

The usual array of further nations - from Russia to Scotland and from the Czech Republic to Turkey - battle it out just below, while Denmark have crept into the top 21, too.

Who cares? Italy have won four World Cups, France one. And on top of that Italy have won the last. France are way below Italy.

Actually 16 teams participated in 1934 and France was among them. The 1938 World Cup was hosted by France and 15 teams participated.

Both World Cups had qualifying rounds.

So your argument is a whole lot of bullshit I'm afraid.

What could have been worth the bother was mentioning the 1934 World Cup was held in fascist Italy, which must have paved the way for an Italian victory. As for the whole history thing. Well, 1998 and 2000 are history as well. Italy is A LOT better in terms of history and are reigning World Champions. There's no way France are even close.

i thought i heard that 6 teams or something only participated in the 1934 WC..but am not sure so i'll take your word for it.

Anyway,i think France on current form are better than Italy...I know Italy are in front of France on points now,but that was only after a flukey scottish goal..Euro 2008 will prove that france are the superior team.

you must have noticed that sometimes football is more than just 90 minutes cause that record didnt help France win the coveted WC of 06.
ya sometimes it needs pricks like Materazzi to do some dirty work..as in pure football terms this Italian squad cant beat the French.

Sadly, in national football too. Last time i checked, 4 was a greater number than 1.
I am talking about current strength of the teams and the last 5 or 6 clashes between them.

Italy won the last game that actually mattered.
True that. But France won the previous 2 games that mattered, 1998 and 2000. And they have gone all the way. And 3-1 in this group also matters. It was a official match, right?

Superior how? If both teams are fit, I would tip Italy to win.

Both teams right now have managers that are somewhat suspect with Domenech being a complete dunce but Italy have technically better players whilst France have the more athletic players.

I used to love France in the platini and Zidane eras, now they are just a bore to watch

Why are you always moaning about Italian football clubs and Italian NT?? do you have something against Italians?

You really now bore us with this attitude, making fun of the Italian NT all the time when they just won the world cup, bashing them when 30% of them are Juventus players. I really sometimes wonder if you support Juventus or you're just here to entertain us, you look like anything but a supporter.

So ffs, stop bashing the NT, they won the world cup you wall head. get over it and buy yourself a life.

That is the second time we beat France in this campaign remember.

And Scotland are now 8-7 up on France in the overall record between the nations.

And France will need to qualify if they want to prove anything other than that they are overrated and have an incompetent half-wit as a coach.

Italy is going through the transitional phase.France on the other hand, have a well gelled team. They have 3 veterans from the 1998 finals as regular starters.Italy only has Cannavaro as a regular starter from the 1998 campaign.Del Piero and Inzaghi arent regular starters anymore.Plus the loss of Nesta and Totti has hit Italy hard.Zidane's retirment was predictable,so France was prepared for it.Italy wasnt prepared for the sudden loss of Nesta and Totti, as both of whom rank amongst the best in the world.

Had France lost Henry and Viera suddenly, they'd be strugling too.

France might be better on paper at the moment, but if Italy still had Lippi incharge,France wouldnt even have gotten the 3-1 at home.Italy's problems lie in the man coaching them.
