Eto’o Fined For Anti-Madrid Remarks
5/25/2005 1:43:00 AM
The Spanish Football Federation has decided to fine Barcelona striker Samuel Eto’o Euros 12,000 for his anti-Madrid utterances while celebrating the League title.
The Federation decided that his remarks were seriously out of line, and could have led to violence. That apart, the committee also felt that such remarks could disrupt harmony between clubs, essential despite the rivalry. The sanction would have been greater had the striker not apologized soon after for his remarks, they said.

While celebrating the title a week ago, Eto’o got carried away and unwittingly blurted out “Madrid b*******, salute the champions,” which has since created a huge media controversy.

The Cameroon international has since apologized and Real Madrid have been rather magnanimous in their acceptance, something that has prevented it from being blown out of proportions. Skipper Raul and Sports Director Butrageno have come out stating that it was one of those things that happen during celebrations, and that the fact that Eto’o apologized immediately, showed he did not mean it.

Eto’o has been disturbed for the last week, and put in a disappointing performance against Villarreal on Sunday night. He now risks losing the ‘Pichichi’ to Diego Forlan, who scored a hat-trick against Barcelona on the night to get to within one goal of the Cameroon international’s 24.

Barça Backroom Row Goes Public
5/27/2005 11:50:00 PM
Frank Rijkaard has joined Joan Laporta in criticising Barcelona vice president Sandro Rossell after the boardroom troubles finally spilled into the public arena.
After lifting their first league title in six seasons, Barca’s celebrations are being threatened by the row.

Laporta has accused his right-hand man of "ruining the moment of happinness that the club is curently enjoying."

But coach Rijkaard is more adamant his disapproval of Rossell’s public attacks on the club and claimed that he was unimpressed when the former Nike director wanted him replaced.

"I had a meeting with Sandro and I talked through the situation when things were not going well on the field at the start of last season, but from there we finished the campaign with a good run," Rijkaard said.

"We went off for our holidays and then Sandro asked a second time for a change of coach.

"The first time I can accept because he was worried but later it surprised me and annoyed me even though the situation has not affected my approach at all."

Assistant coach, Henk ten Cate, was in an unforgiving mood and would not be sorry if Rossell were to leave the club, as has been reported, at the end o next month.

"Frank and I will never forget what Sandro has done, I think that in two years I have spoken just three times with him and it is clear that on a professional basis there is no communication between us," he said.

Forlan has been the best forward in Spain this season, no doubt. He's and Riquelmes importance to Villarreal has taken em to the Champions league.

The way he meets the ball, excellent first touch EVERY time, he's perfect finishing.
Lets just hope Villarreal dares to splash some on Riquelme cause if so they will have a shot in the CL.

Best Liga XI 04/05
5/26/2005 7:11:00 PM
These are the players that have really excelled this season. There are also five substitutes and a coach. The formation is 3-4-3 (and an attacking one at that. But hey, it’s La Liga!).
Goalkeeper - Iker Casillas (Real Madrid)
The Merengues ‘keeper displayed some extra-terrestrial skills and frequently seemed to have a force-field protecting the goal, especially in the tumultuous pre-Christmas period. Real’s perceived incompetence brought reems of insults, so Iker didn’t get the plaudits he deserved for regularly saving the Galacticos bacon.

Defender - Carles Puyol (Barcelona)
A lion at the back and an absolute rock. Adored by the fans, the archetypal captain marvel was superb all season and is unquestionably the heart and soul of his championship winning team, regularly playing through the pain barrier to drag his team to illustrious victory.

Defender - Gonzalo Rodriguez (Villarreal)
The cultured yet imposing stopper won rave reviews for his displays. Near the top of many summer wish lists, the Argentine helped to ensure the red-hot performances of his team mates further up the field brought maximum points more often than not.

Defender - Sergio Ramos (Sevilla)
Scored a scorching free kick against Real recently, capping an excellent season for the young defender. Tracked by a host of clubs, the Sevilla young gun is certain to be a mainstay in the Spanish national defence for years to come. Ramos is yet another cast-iron endorsement of the club’s superb youth setup.

Midfielder - Ivan De La Pena (Espanyol)
Espanyol’s drive for a Champions League spot was a massive shock to everyone in Spanish football. Coach Lotina must take credit but the ‘Little Buddha’, formerly a star of Barca in the mid nineties, rolled back the years and exhibited the kind of brilliant playmaking most people thought had long left him. Nice to have him back.

Midfielder - Juan Roman Riquelme (Villarreal)
The ex–Boca conjurer’s artistry has enhanced La Liga this season. Integral to the yellow submarine, Roman has proved all his critics wrong since he arrived at El Madrigal. He has now established himself as one of the finest players in Europe, no matter what shirt he wears next season.

Midfielder - Xavi (Barcelona)
What can you say? Despite the influx of top attacking talent and the iconic presence of Ronaldinho, Xavi again proved the Blaugrana’s most important player. The man has it all, and is the oil in the Barca engine.

Midfielder - Ronaldinho (Barcelona)
Perhaps not as other-worldly as in 03/04, but this term there were others to share the load. Scored some unbelievable goals (AC Milan and Chelsea stand out), and has surely rubber-stamped his status as the best player on the planet. He has made football more exciting than many thought it could be.

Striker - Samuel Eto’o (Barcelona)
Delivered the goods, and then some, in his first season at Camp Nou. Whoever wins the Pichichi prize, Barca know they have a crown jewel to rival Ronnie. His immense pace and acceleration, together which crisp finishing and overwhelming desire to succeed will undoubtedly see loftier heights scaled.

Striker - Ricardo Oliveira (Real Betis)
The Valencia cast-off’s opportunities were limited at the Mestalla. It was a gamble to pick up the unproven Brazilian, but he has repaid Llorenc Serra Ferrer’s faith in outstanding fashion with a glut of goals. He and Edu have been the most impressive front partnership in La Liga.

Striker - Diego Forlan (Villarreal)
What a transformation. Many in the UK giggled when Manuel Pellegrini took the Uruguayan from Old Trafford in January, but Fergie probably can’t believe his eyes now. A hat-trick at Camp Nou to add to the two he scored in the home win against Barca highlights his appetite for the big occasion. The blonde bombshell has unexpectedly asserted himself as one of the division's best marksman.

Coach - Frank Rijkaard (Barcelona)
Its hard to appreciate just how close the Dutchman was to the sack eighteen months ago. The 2004 transformation was the key turning point. The ex-Milan midfield conductor recruited well in the summer, and coped superbly with the shocking injury epidemic that followed. Much is owed to him after years of mediocrity in Catalynia.

Kluivert Moves To Valencia
6/3/2005 4:42:00 PM

Patrick Kluivert has signed a three-year contract with Valencia after being released by Newcastle.
The Dutch international wasn't kept on by the Magpies after a disappointing season in the Premiership.

The 28-year-old now returns to Spain where he enjoyed success with Barcelona.

"Valencia is an enormous team and therefore I am very excited about this agreement," Kluivert said.

"I have good memories of Spain and therefore I’m glad to make my return, I’m looking forward to playing in the Primera Liga again."
