I believe it comes out of an American feeling of superiority towards the Europeans.

Shortly after the second worldwar, the Americans came in touch with European football. As they didn't see the beauty of the game and they felt sorry for us, they called the game "sucker" which later turned into "soccer".

Sorry :D

Or maybe, when we Americans came over after the 2nd world war, we thought that it was a bunch of ugly women playing it, and one of the GI's said, "Hey private, go over there and 'Sock Her' one, will you.

Hence, "Sock Her", became Soccer.

My Bad.:D

That's a great way of boosting your post count, Rover, by over-stating the obvious.

Are you sure you're glad to see me back??:D

Actually "Soccer" is latin for: "WTF do you mean I can't use my hands, that's bullshit!!!"

OK, Maybe it isn't, but here's the REAL meaning behind the word.

Everyone thinks that the real name of football is just that, football.

Well, it isn't. The Official name of the sport is "association football", and soccer is a slang corruption for "assoc".

So...it's 'as SOC[] (cer) football' then...can I quote you on this as being the definitive answer?

    You can.

I looked it up on Microsoft Encarta.

So its not like I had this sudden brainstorm after chugging down 7 "Code Red" Mountain Dew's.

yeah, soccer sucks, football kicks ass!

if so, then the Dutch language must be from another universe or something.
I never said Dutch was normal.

Hell, anyone who claims that should be shot, hanged and shot again.

That's right. Its origins are in English public schools - it's the same sort of abbreviation that turned "Rugby football" into "Rugger", which you occasionally still hear.
