Anybody into sim racing?

I've been a long-time fan of racing games and following motorsport and during the pandemic sunk 400 hours into Assetto Corsa with a controller.

Finally got a proper wheel this month. Loving it! Not as quick yet with the wheel and shifter (I never learned to drive irl so it's a new set of movements for me lol) but looking forward to getting quicker all the time.

Pretty well just Assetto Corsa for me, but I've dabbled with Dirt Rally 2.0 and BeamNG as well plus Dirt 4 and Wreckfest which aren't really sims of course! Curious about the new Le Mans game but tbh why pay for that stuff when AC has so many quality mods for much cheaper or even free

Yeah there’s a race track not too far from where I live, and they have High Performance Driver Education (HPDE) classes and track days pretty often.

I need to set up my car for it though- need new brakes and tires first.

late 90's, early 00's i played a lot. we used to play the first need for speed at the dorm, then nfs: porsche, sports car gt, grand prix legends, colin mcrae rally, richard burns rally, etc. then i moved a few times, didn't care about upgrading the pc, never bought a console, so that was it. i recently found the cool little microsoft wheel i used to play with. it was still working, i gave it to a buddy who's building a retro gaming pc with traditional monitor, dull looking tower case, dos + win95, you know the drill

i didn't play too much in the good majority of the last 20 years though. then i saw forza 4 at my nephew's place and i wanted to try it. integrated radeon 11 vega graphics weren't enough so i said fuck it, scored a sub 200€ graphics card on ebay (6700xt), bought an xbox controller and the almost delisted game and i play from time to time. couldn't be happier. i also bought assetto corsa, but that doesn't feel right without the wheel. same with some recent f1 game i tried. on the long run i'll get a wheel. also wreckfest is cool, like the soundtrack, it's good for a short late night session, switches off the brain completely. far from being a sim though, just like forza

waiting for the new assetto corsa release, that must be nice. i hope it plays a bit better with a controller lol, although i bet it will remain a hardcore sim

the 3-series? that's a good intro but you'll want something lighter in no time. also tracks kill breaks and tires, and chassis too if you happen to have to emergency break. one of these almost shook the life out of my corolla at hungaroring lol:

anyway be gentle with your daily driver on a track. (and if you have a special track car and it's not the daily then just ignore what i said.) i can't wait to finish my attic renovation, first thing i'll get after that will be an mx5 or mr2 for fun

I got a great deal on a Thrustmaster TX. £400+ new on Amazon and i found one on ebay for £180. Added a TH8S shifter. So much fun man.

With a controller it took a while to learn how to temper my trigger inputs and analogue stick control for driving but I got pretty fast. I was beating AI on Assetto Corsa set to 93% difficulty. Now with the wheel I'm back at 80% and starting with slower cars to learn control and such.

that much of a difference between the controller and the wheel is a bit of a surprise. with the wheel i used to be faster than with a keyboard (no controller back in the days). you'll get there too, just take your time. will check out the models, thanks for sharing the info

btw if you learn to drive with a wheel, then driving a real car wouldn't be a problem either. sim racers can drift with a surprising level of confidence, youtube is full of those clips

I've had Assetto Corsa sat in my steam account for years, barely even played it, yet I've seen such cool mods for it like street racing in Japan.

I got a steering wheel, pedals and gear shift, although the clamp on the gear shift is broken, but I can still change gears on the wheel, bought it off a colleague at work who bought an upgrade. Only ever used it for Euro truck simulator and Dirt 5

Gran Turismo 4 is still the best racing game ever made!

On the weekend I found my old mod chipped PS2 and memory cards. Luckily I have a spare old TV that accepts component input.

I played a lot of Forza Motorsport 3 & 4 on the 360 and it saddens me to see the current state of that series. Forza Horizon is great arcadey fun but even that series needs a refresh IMO.
