Siena have yet to record a championship victory away from the Artemio Franchi this season. Giuseppe Sannino’s men, who are currently hovering narrowly above the relegation zone, have amassed just four points on their travels.
The Tuscan outfit did, however, begin their away campaign with two positive results. Catania were held to a goalless shutout in Sicily, while Vitiello’s late strike rescued a point against Roma.
Siena first dipped away from home in a 2-0 defeat to Palermo, but the next game saw the Bianconeri rediscover their defensive solidarity and snatch a creditable point from a 0-0 draw in Cagliari. Calaiò’s first-half penalty then set them on their way against Novara before Gemiti equalised for the hosts.
Yet the draw in Piedmont was be followed by a run of five successive defeats on the road.
Udinese were up first, with Basta’s goal breaking the deadlock at the Friuli. Di Natale doubled the lead, rendering Bolzoni’s strike a mere consolation. Sannino’s side slipped to another narrow defeat in Bologna, with Di Vaio inflicting the damage just before the half-hour mark.
The Bianconeri then travelled to the San Siro and saw their defensive resilience shattered through second-half goals from Nocerino and Ibrahimovic. More away misery followed in Parma, as strikes from Biabiany, Valiani and Giovinco enabled the Gialloblu to cruise to a 3-1 victory.
Siena’s last away trip saw them slump to a 2-1 defeat in Florence. Jovetic found the target after just four minutes, with Natali extending the Viola’s lead midway through the second half. Calaiò reduced the deficit in the dying seconds.
