There really useful, free role allows the player to roam about the pitch, you want to give this role if you use a playmaker e.g nedved. People who should be given free roles should have high passing, creativity and flair. The ideal free role player is riquelme (i personally use D'Alessandro - Best signing ive ever made, he single handedly won me the scudetto in my first year back up!!). Bear in mind that if you set a player with the free role they generally wont make as much effort to cover and help their team mates out so only set one player with it.
Hold up ball should be given to a strong creative striker, the use of this is that when the player recieves the ball they will keep posession and allow their team mates to join into play, use this if you play with 1 or more AMs. this player should be strong, have good balance and be creative. I used to give this to Ibra but now its more the bojinov role, however its best not to use this tactic if you play counter attacking football.

Is there a feature in the game where you can have your scout team scout random players, instead of you searching through known players or players that seem good once you play the team or something? Like in FIFA '06, I noticed there was a feature where you can have your scout sent to a continent and scout players who then report back to you give you the asking price of that player. Anything like that?
