i think uefa should allow liverpool in to defend their crown . imagine if the same faith happened to juve.

i see some welsh club has offered liverpool a playoff for their spot in the qualifiers generating revenue for themselves.

come on uefa in the interest of sport change the rules. i know it happened in spain and the spanish fa replaced zaragosa with real, but the champions should automatically quailfy in my opinion. whats everyones thought

Consistency is the word here. If Spain were only allowed 4 teams, England should only be allowed 4. Whether its Liverpool or Everton well its up to the FA to decide, or it should be at least.
Let them have a two leg playoff or something.. actually I don't care.

I agree that Liverpool should be allowed to defend their crown. However, Lennart Johanssen threw them that particular bone not too long ago, and the English FA c*nts cruelly snatched it outta their mouths by saying Everton will go to the Champs League. In this light, their request for a 5th English spot is simply laughable.

but the english fa commity that made the decision mainly consisted of key people from clubs like arsenal- david dein and others who would see liverpool as more of a threat to them than everton and imo made a biased decision

imagine of juve won it and finished behind milan inter samp and udinese, how would you feel then- although i beleive the italian fa would not be as stupid as its english counterparts but for arguments sake say they decided the same as england- surely champions should have an automatic place

I agree that there shouldn't be a 5th position. a welsh club (TNS) offered to face pool in a one game playoff for TNS's spot, but the welsh association said no way. I do think that some sort of playoff would be the fairest. maybe Liverpool-Everton??? that would be the fairest playoff scenario imo. of course, so small teams would probably love to do a playoff because of the financial gain of facing pool

Why should Everton have to play in a play off? The rules were clear at the beginning of the season, top 4 places qualify for CL. Can't just change it at their expense.

That said, Liverpool shoud be given the right to defend it, about how they sholuld be integrated though, I have no idea.

Liverpool should not be allowed in the CL next season.

Sorry, but if you cant hack it in your own domestic league and make the fourth place, you do not deserve to be there next season. Plus, picture how ****ing unfair and harsh it would be to little everton to have their champions league dream cut down because it happened to be a season where another english team which was too rubbish to beat them in their own domestic league takes their difficultly earned spot.

The rules were created in this instance, to stop teams from just only focusing on the CL once safety has been reached in their own domestic leagues. 'Pool fans should be satisfied anyway that they actually won it- hell, If juventus won it I know I wouldnt care.

I think they should be allowed into the CL, but only as the 4th English team. The English FA should, IMO, pay Everton the money they would have gotten from the CL for the group stage and the first knockout stage, or at least the difference for the CL and UEFA Cup. And IMO Liverpool should have to play in the Qualifying round just like Everton would.

Talk about injustice. Qualifying for the CL is the reward for a hard-fought national campaign. (See: Everton)

And unlike the CL -- where the structure is so light as there are greater opportunities for flukes, bad ref calls, player illnesses and injuries, etc., that can totally skew the resulting winners and losers -- league championships are long, grinding, and pretty much everything fairly comes out in the wash at the end.

Winning the CL is perhaps more difficult than a national league in some ways because of these double (or single) match eliminations, so a lot more is left up the the vagaries of chance, a bad referee call, a player taking a constructed dive, etc. After 38 games of a national campaign, it's not necessarily easier than a CL at all, but it is a much more thorough method of ensuring that the best teams do rise to the top.

I see giving automatic placement to a CL winner as rewarding chance, luck, etc., over the hard work, durability, and the great difficulty in fluking your way into qualifying for the CL through your national league performance.

Winning the CL requires enough luck for even the most skilled teams as it is. We don't need to add more luck in the process of actually qualifying for it.

Everton earned their place by going through the most gruelling and fair of qualifiers. Liverpool did not, and would otherwise qualify by resting on their domestic laurels.

Why should Liverpool take Everton's place as the fourth english team? It would be very unfair to Everton if they wouldn't be allowed to play in CL next season. They fought all the season for that spot, and now to have that spot taken just like that, would be very unfair to them. It's Liverpool's fault they didnt get the 4th place in the EPL.

So, no Liverpool in the CL.

no-one has advocated Liverpool replacing everton on this forum. eveyone is in agreement that it would be completely unfair to do that

I think that's a fair assessment. I would move to change the rule for the future - a playoff between the 4th place and the Champions of Europe for the last place would seem fairest. However, the rules for this year should not be changed retrospectively - Everton have qualified, and should remain that way. If UEFA want to bend thinbgs by letting TNS or whoever playoff against 'Pool in a one-off game, that's fine by me (like UEFA care what I think ;)).
