Juventus-Arezzo closes out 2006
Still stricken by the loss of Alessio and Riccardo, Juventus return to the Stadio Olimpico one week on from that accursed day, Friday 15th December. To speak about football, formations, tactics and tacticians at a time like this isn’t easy, but it’s the right thing to do, for any discussion of Juventus is also a discussion of our two boys and their greatest passion.
Friday’s game is a championship first, a 'top vs. bottom’ clash between the Bianconeri, who lie first in the overall standings, and the Tuscans who, weighed down by a six point penalty, have so far been unable to free themselves from the foot of the table. Their first and only away win this season came on their most recent trip, a 1-0 at Hellas Verona which handed them three particularly precious points against fellow relegation candidates. On that occasion it was Floro Flores who bagged the winning goal, seconds from the final whistle. With the exception of their victory in Verona, the Tuscans have won just once this term, a resounding 4-1 defeat of Pescara to add to their collection of six draws (the last coming three days ago at home to Crotone). Their 17 goals conceded would easily be good enough for a comfortable mid-table position were it not for a sterile attack which has curbed their ambitions: Arezzo have scored just seven goals this season, the second worst total in the championship. As one might expect, Sarri’s outfit will be looking to make the most of their defensive qualities at the Olimpico on Friday, keeping things tight at the back and resting their hopes on the counter-attack. Conversely, Juventus will be looking to grab a goal early on, with a full complement of strikers at their disposal: Del Piero and Trezeguet are both back after lengthy absences and Zalayeta is on the top of his game after sealing the winner at Bologna on Tuesday night. That goal handed victory to the Bianconeri over a direct promotion rival and saw them regain top spot, shoulder to shoulder with Napoli, Genoa and Ulivieri’s vanquished men.
