(4-2-3-1)

Gianluca Pagliuca (Bologna)

There isn't once the former Azzurro fails to be a vital part of his team's positive results. Thanks to him and his superb saves, Bologna are safe from relegation.

------

Giuseppe Pancaro (AC Milan)

The Rossoneri's unexpected secret weapon this season. He was supposed to cover for Kaladze's injury but Pancaro has convinced his coach to play him as a starter in nearly all of Milan's matches.

Matteo Ferrari (Parma)

Class and poise abundant in the young Parma captain who is now definitely ready for a Serie A giant. The young defender has been reliable in most matches leaving no room for the opposing strikers. Inter must be wondering why did they let go of one of the most promising and solid defenders in Italy.

Jaap Stam (Lazio)

If Roma's Walter Samuel is 'The Wall' , then Lazio's Jaap Stam is 'The Dam'. The strong Dutchman not only commanded the Lazio defense so perfectly this season, he also helped the off-form Lazio offense at times.

Ze Maria (Perugia)

The Grifoni's Brazlian was a constant thorn in the side of the opposing defenders with dangerous crosses and pinpoint passes. He also is the team's penalty taker and not a bad free-kick specialist either!

------

Andrea Pirlo (AC Milan)

King of Milan's midfield this season, his ticket to Portugal is officially booked.

Sergio Volpi (Sampdoria)

The Italian midfielder did well to hold down Sampdoria's midfield together in a deep role and also participate in the attacks of the team. A great free kick specialist too!

-----------

Ricardo Kaka (Milan)

It's amazing how the 23 year old Brazilian has become one of the best players of the world's most difficult league in just seven months. His magical style and class has left the Italian audience simply in awe.

Francesco Totti (Roma)

Played as a true Roman captain this season as he literally carried the Giallorossi to victory after victory in a super-human performance. Looks a safe bet to star in Euro2004 for Italy.

Stefano Fiore (Lazio)

Has been Lazio's best and most consistent player this season, especially after Stankovic left to Inter and gave him more freedom in midfield. The former Udinese star surely deserves to be in Trap's plans for Italy's Euro2004 challenge.
---------------

Andriy Shevchenko (Milan)

The current top scorer, Sheva seem to be returning to his old '99 form with lethal finishing and great goals, especially in nig matches.

----------------

Subs:

Sebastian Frey (Parma)

Another one of Inter's former players, the French GK will certainly have many clubs queue for his services next season, including Arsenal and Man Utd.

Pierre Kroldrup (Udinese)

Denmark will soon have a world class defender at their disposal.. The young Udinese defender always looked confident and solid, something like Legrottaglie but of last season ofcourse !!

Amantino Mancini (Roma)

There's something divine about this young Brazilian who came out of nowhere to become one of the best offensive wings on the planet. Definetly a shrewd signing from mister Capello. Mancini's wonder back-heel goal in the derby is also worthy of a mention and probably is this season's best goal.

Javier Chevanton (Lecce)

Time for the Uruguayan hitman to look for a bigger club as he certainly deserves to play in a big stage after his exploits this season.

Alberto Gilardino (AC Parma)

His goals demonstrated that even without Adriano this team is still very strong. Congratulations Prandelli and all Parma fans !!

--------------------

wow we managed to bring a big diaspointing player :groan:
That's only my opinion. Legro had an excellent season with Chievo and his match against us was enough proof of his capablities in holding off strikers. But this season he disappointed everyone and wasn't able to integrate well in the side. He wasted chance after chance and kept us believing that he will improve next time he plays. That day never came ....

yeah i know but dont u think that many other goal keeper this year did a brilliant job..
like as much as i hate inter but toldo did a pretty good job in securing his goal.
although legro most dispaointing i belive we have players like vieri and oba who were very disapointing and corradi.
    althugh this is just imo.
well maybe that day will come..if he did it with cheivo he will do it with juve..

Fahad -- great asessments. I am impressed with your choices. Some of them lean a little towards an emphasis on the unexpected (e.g., I might suggest that Pancaro has been surpisingly good, particularly on offense, but perhaps not the best in Serie A at his position), but every one of them is sound.

The only other notables I can think of:

    * Pre-Inter Adriano (A, Parma) [Is that anything like "Young Elvis?"]
    * Marchionni (M, Parma)
    * Bettarini (D, Sampdoria)
    * Antonioli (P, Sampdoria) [Save for his laugher goal allowed against Parma in the mud]

    And at the club level:

Best Surprise of the season = Parma

Biggest Disappointment of the season = Milan's ouster from the CL (followed by the league seasons of Perugia and probably Juve)

Those players did well but were not consistent throughout the season. I would only add Antonio Cassano as he developed into a complete player this season and combined extremely well with Totti. With Montella injured, Del Vecchio and Carew off-form, Cassano certainly didn't disappoint.

That was in the 1998-99 season when Milan were last crowned champions, we finished 7th I think. We were also coming off a wining season. But after 98-99 we were runners up for two years in succession (behind Lazio and Roma), before winning the championship twice in succession too.

We finished 5th, that's the season I started supporting Juve :)
5th? I'm not sure coz we had to play in the Intertoto Cup the next season along with Udinese (ahh, the humiliation). I think we finished 6th and Udinese 7th or the other way around.

I'm pretty sure we were level on points and we finished 5th and Udinese 6th because we had a better goal difference
