Greg, I hope you're not coming to conclusions from the use of assumptions. Just because Appiah was case in point does not mean Mutu will follow suit, obviously. That is why we need to see what he's capable of instead of just writing him off before he gets a decent chance.
Of course not. But while I do not lump Mutu in the same category as Appiah in full expectations that the result will be the same, I do see parallels in the performance of the respective players (at least at the NT level) and their treatment by Capello et al.
Mutu had a tremendous season and had a great performance at Parma in '03 and even moreso at Dinamo Bucarest in '00. But beyond that, he hasn't shown the consistency year-over-year like he needs to in order to earn a spot in a regular rotation in a top European club. And this is before the coke issue. Even if he is 100% clean now, he still hasn't earned the right to get in front in line ahead of all the players who played clean for the past couple of seasons.
Of course, the other extreme is to lock him out entirely, which is what we have now. But the right balance is somewhere inbetween. I think it would be smart to put him in and test him more -- so at least if there is the intention of selling him off, we do so knowing full well of the value we already have in hand (or not).
