it depends on where you go and how isolated you plan to be. As well as your level of experience around big animals. I don’t hike with anything more than bear spray. However, in places like Wyoming and Montana that’s not ideal.

if you’re going to areas with bears and mountain lions then I recommend bear spray. If not, then it shouldn’t be an issue, just don’t try to get a selfie with a moose

Unless you are in densely populated bear country I wouldn't think you need a weapon for anything. I believe the preferred defense for bears is either bear mace or a .44
