Serie A Preview: Roma-Inter
After winning their 11th straight match against Lazio last weekend, thereby setting a new Serie A record for consecutive wins, Roma will try to extend their great run against the Nerazzurri.
BACKGROUND
Juventus may be on top of the table by a considerable margin, Roma are now probably the happiest team in the Serie A, and the most in form one. The 2-0 win against their bitter enemies Lazio will go down as one of the most important and memorable derby wins ever. Setting a new record for consecutive wins is a great thing in itself, but doing that against your most hated rivals in a derby must make it all the more special and the Giallorossi side of Rome is in seventh heaven these days. In the process they have gone from 10th in the table to 4th, overtaking Fiorentina who were in that position for a long time, and gained no less than 10 points on Inter. In fact, another win tonight and Roma will be only one point behind Inter, something that was unthinkable just two months ago. Just like it was unthinkable that Roma, a side marred by inconsistency ever since Capello left for Juventus, would be able to break that record of consecutive wins jointly established by Juventus, Milan and Bologna. The quality players were there from the start, but perhaps the departure of Cassano to Real Madrid had a positive effect on the group, as it was widely known the rebellious Cassano was only a burden on the dressing room harmony after refusing repeatedly to sign the contract extensions Roma offered him.
Inter aren’t going through as good a period as Roma. They have allowed Milan to overtake them again in second place, and with the Rossoneri facing Empoli this round, it’s likely Inter will be further removed from their rivals, whom they led by six points only a few weeks ago and now trail by two, after this match. They lost the crucial matches against Fiorentina and Juventus, once again falling short at the decisive moments, and went back to winning ways against a lousy Udinese side last week. Still, Inter have what it takes to stop Roma’s incredible run, but if they don’t give it their all or start the match badly as against Ajax, when they conceded two early goals before recuperating in the second half, there will be no place to hide for Inter. Although they suffered a little against Lazio, Roma are playing great football this period and are having luck at the important moments, something Inter always seem to lack. However this match is open to any result, and looking at the last few seasons this fixture has always produced plenty of goals, so let’s hope that trend continues on when the sides meet again on Sunday night.
TEAM NEWS
Roma
Totti and Tommasi will surely be unavailable through injury, while Aquilani is suspended.
Inter
Adriano and Samuel are suspended, while Veron is out injured.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Amantino Mancini (Roma)
A highly skilled Brazilian playmaker who exploded into the scene in Capello’s last season in Rome, then faded a little under Del Neri and had a rough start to this season too, but is now back to his best form. Very creative and talented winger with amazing dribbling skills, as he showed in the move that led to Roma’s second goal in the derby.
Julio Cruz (Inter)
Reportedly Roma would have liked to sign him at the end of the season, but the Argentine recently extended his contract from 2006 to 2008, so he’s probably no longer an option for them. This season he has been very valuable for Inter, being the most frequent scorer of all the strikers. Although Adriano has scored a handful more, Cruz hasn’t played nearly as much as him.
POSSIBLE STARTING XI’s
Roma (4-2-3-1):
Doni; Panucci, Mexes, Chivu, Cufré; De Rossi, Dacourt; Taddei, Perrotta, Mancini; Montella.
Inter (4-4-2):
Toldo; J. Zanetti, Cordoba, Materazzi, Burdisso; Figo, Pizarro, Cambiasso, Stankovic; Cruz, Martins.
PREDICTION
Despite the fact that Inter are probably superior to Roma in terms of quality, the most unlikely result in this match is an Inter win. In fact, no one would be too surprised if Roma just continued their run, extending it to an astounding 12 consecutive wins. But since all good things come to an end, I believe a battling draw is the most likely result in the end.
