4-2-3-1 isn't even an offensive formation. It can be even more defensive than 4-4-2. It's just a perfect formation for a team that has a player like Diego but also bad fullbacks that can't provide the width. There's no way Candreva could be worse on the left in 4-2-3-1 than Marchisio on the left in 4-4-2.
