It's downright retarded. Teams win trophies, not individual players. Unless I misunderstood you and you meant player trophies..

Squad named for tomorrow's game

Vincenzo Iaquinta isn’t going to make it: the striker hasn't recovered from his bout of bronchitis and his name joins the list of long-term injured players that includes Marchionni, Boumsong, Camoranesi and Andrade.

Manager Ranieri named the following 19-man squad for the game against Genoa:
1 Buffon
2 Birindelli
3 Chiellini
4 Almiron
5 Zebina
6 Zanetti
7 Salihamidzic
10 Del Piero
11 Nedved
12 Belardi
17 Trezeguet
19 Criscito
20 Palladino
21 Grygera
23 Nocerino
24 Olivera
28 Molinaro
30 Tiago
33 Legrottaglie

Ranieri ready to get back in action

“Playing again after a break is tough for everyone. It's better if you play regularly, but we're entering a cycle of interesting matches now. Genoa are next and they're having an excellent period: they won all of their last three games and we expect a very tough match”. Manager Ranieri touched upon various subjects during the press conference held in Vinovo on the eve of the match against Genoa. First of all the opponents' condition: “We seem to be facing a lot of teams at their best. It happened against Roma, against Fiorentina and now Genoa. They're a good team and their secret weapon is a good organization, they press a lot and they play almost automatically, moving the ball around quickly. They're a good team and they're doing very well, considering they're a newly promoted team, like us”.

Iaquinta will miss the match against Genoa, but even so Ranieri doesn't dismiss the possibility of playing with three up front: “We could play with three up front even without Iaquinta, but I still need to think things through, to see who could eventually play behind the strikers. Gasperini is an excellent manager and like me he changes his formation according to the team he's facing, so I don't want to give him any advantage in this respect”. The match against Genoa will be a special one for Mimmo Criscito, but he hasn't been employed since the Reggina game: “I haven't forgotten him, but the team is doing well playing with a certain module, and I don't see why I should change it. But he'll get the chance to play again, maybe even tomorrow, why not?”. Camoranesi won't be playing, but he's recovering very well: “I think he may even be recovering quicker than planned. He's already been training with the rest of the team and even if he's still got some work to do on his own, we're really happy. We'll see if he can already play against Empoli”.

One man who'll be playing for sure, and from the start, is Del Piero, who has just renewed his contract: “I'm very happy that Alex signed. When I say that the new players are fitting in well because the old ones are helping them... well, Del Piero is the best example of this. Did I ever fear that he and the Club wouldn't reach an agreement? When Buffon signed it seemed logical, at least to me, that all the others would stay and indeed consequently Trezeguet, Camoranesi, Nedved all signed and now Del Piero too. These players feel the weight of the shirt they're wearing and this spirit is rubbing off on the new arrivals. It is like a seed that has to be watered at the right time, lovingly cared for and only the team veterans can do this, even if they don't talk much, but by setting an example with their behaviour”. Tiago could use such an example, as he didn't behave as he should have when he spoke to Portuguese paper “O Jogo” recently. The midfielder complained that he's not playing and, after the Club's response, now it was up to Ranieri to reply: “I was very annoyed by Tiago's words and I was disappointed. He must react: true champions are the ones who know how to pick themselves up when things aren't going well. It was my idea to sign him so I take all responsibility, but I play those who serve the team best, I don't consider their age, or how much they cost, or how much they earn. Players who don't play are always disappointed, but nobody makes statements like that, because they always damage the group”.

Ranieri Fears Genoa

Juventus Coach Claudio Ranieri has admitted that tomorrow's Serie A clash with Genoa will be a difficult test for his players.

Genoa returned to the top-flight this season after a 12-year absence but many were tipping them to go straight back down after the comprehensive 3-0 home defeat to Milan on the first day of the season.

However the Rossoblu have since gone six games unbeaten and have won their last three fixtures against Udinese, Genoa and Cagliari to move into a magnificent fifth position in the league.

“After the 3-0 opening defeat to Milan, they really turned it around with three consecutive victories," said Ranieri. "They are organised, pressure opponents, play one or two-touch football. They have a good squad.

“We seem to be taking on teams during their best period of form. That was the situation with Roma, Fiorentina and now Genoa.

"They are promoted like us, but are doing very well and if we can aim for a Champions League spot, then they can go for the UEFA Cup.”

Genoa currently sit just two points behind Juventus and a win tomorrow at the Stadio Olimpico will see them overtake their promotion rivals from last year.

The last time these two teams met in Serie A was in May 1995, when goals from Roberto Baggio, Fabrizio Ravanelli, Gianluca Vialli and Robert Jarni led Juventus to an emphatic 4-0 victory.

Serie A Preview: Juventus - Genoa

Who: Juventus (2nd, 14pts) vs Genoa (5th, 12pts)
When: 2030 CET, Sunday 21 October
Where: Stadio Olimpico, Turin

The Golden Boy Looking To Celebrate His New Contract

Juventus go into this game full of confidence after a fine run of recent results. After the disappointing 1-0 defeat at home to Udinese in week four, the Bianconeri have since gained two excellent away draws at Roma and Fiorentina, and two victories against Reggina and Torino.

The Old Lady should also be boosted by the news that talismanic captain Alessandro Del Piero has finally signed a new contract. The Golden Boy had been involved in months of fractious negotiations which were damaging the atmosphere around the club. The new deal should also see an improvement in fortunes for Del Piero himself.

The 32-year-old has had a somewhat indifferent start to the campaign, scoring just one goal in seven games. As a result he has come under a barrage of criticism in the Italian press, with some sources claiming that he is no longer the player he once was. This could prove dangerous for Genoa, as Del Piero has always been at his best when he feels he has something to prove.

Juventus currently sit in second-place in the league and one should not write off their chances of fighting for the Scudetto this season. In David Trezeguet they have possibly the most prolific striker in Serie A. The French forward has scored seven in as many games this season, and it would take a brave man to bet against him adding to this tally on Sunday.

The Bianconeri defence had been struggling in the first few weeks of the season, conceding six goals in their first four games. However since the injury to Jorge Andrade early in the second-half against Roma in week four, Juve have conceded just once in over 300 minutes of football, and that was an 88th minute penalty against Fiorentina. The centre-back partnership of Giorgio Chiellini and Nicola Legrottaglie has looked as solid as a rock, and the latter in particular, despite giving away the penalty against the Viola, has certainly surprised many with his stellar performances.

Genoa And Borriello In Confident Mood

Genoa also come into this game with a spring in their step. After the comprehensive 3-0 home defeat to Milan on the opening-day of the season, many in the peninsula were predicting that the Rossoblu would be returning straight back to Serie B.

However they have since gone the next six games unbeaten, including three successive victories against Udinese, Napoli and Cagliari in their last three games. This has lifted them to a magnificent fifth place in the Serie A standings, above Milan, and just two points behind Juventus.

The key man behind this success has been striker Marco Borriello who has scored five of the team’s eight goals, including a stunning hat-trick in the 3-2 victory over Udinese. The 25-year-old Borriello was once rated as one of Italy’s most promising youngsters but until this season he had dreadfully failed to fulfil this talent.

Having joined Milan in 2002, he jumped around without success at clubs such as Sampdoria, Reggina and Empoli. In December of last year he tested positive for a drugs test and after receiving a three-month ban, many believed it may be the end of the forward’s career.

However this season Borriello has exploded onto the scene and some are even talking of a possible Italy call-up in the near future. If Genoa are to spring a shock against Juventus on Sunday, then Borriello is likely to be in the thick of the action.

The last time the two teams met in Serie A was in May 1995 when Juventus thrashed Genoa 4-0, with Roberto Baggio, Fabrizio Ravanelli, Robert Jarni and Gianluca Vialli all getting on the scoresheet. The result helped succumb Genoa to relegation at the end of the campaign and the Rossoblu have only just returned, some 12 years later.

TEAM NEWS

Juventus

Vincenzo Iaquinta is a doubt after being struck down by flu, but if the ex-Udinese man is passed fit, he is likely to take his place in a forward trident alongside Del Piero and Trezeguet.

In defence Jean-Alain Boumsong is still out injured, while Jorge Andrade is likely to miss most of the season with a broken kneecap. Therefore Giorgio Chiellini and Nicola Legrottaglie will continue their impressive partnership in the centre of defence.

Sergio Almiron has recovered from a sprained ankle and will play, meaning that new Azzurri international Antonio Nocerino, and Portuguese flop Tiago, will start on the bench. Mauro Camoranesi is still unavailable due to a thigh strain.

Genoa

Genoa have no injury concerns, and Franceso Bega, Gleison Santos, and former Juventus youngster Andrea Masiello are all in contention having recovered from slight problems.

Gasperini is likely to stick with his ultra-attacking 3-4-3 system, and Marco Di Vaio may return up-front after scoring as a substitute against Cagliari.

POSSIBLIE STARTING LINE-UPS

Juventus: Buffon; Grygera, Legrottaglie, Chiellini, Molinaro; Zanetti, Almiron, Nedved; Del Piero, Trezeguet, Iaquinta

Genoa: Rubinho; Konko, Bovo, Lucarelli; Rossi, Paro, Juric, Danilo; Sculli, Borriello, Di Vaio

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Juventus – Alessandro Del Piero

The Golden Boy will be looking to celebrate his new contract with a goal and do not be surprised to see this happen. The 32-year-old is often at his best when he has a point to prove and this will be the perfect opportunity for him to show the critics that he is not past his best.

Genoa – Marco Borriello

The Napoli-born striker has been in stunning form this season and will be looking to add to the five goals he has already scored in Serie A. The ex-Milan flop has suddenly burst onto the scene after a number of disappointing seasons. Now is the chance for Borriello to prove that he can mix it with the bigger teams.

PREDICTION

Juventus really impressed me during their last game against Fiorentina and they should have too much quality for Genoa in this one. I like making bold predictions and something is telling me that Del Piero is going to score and then run off towards the camera to vent out all his fury from the recent troubles and criticism.

Juventus 2 – 0 Genoa

Sneijder's still a mediocre football player. Tiago's not though. And I think Dominic knows Sneijder a wee bit better than you do.
Of course he knows more about Sneijder than I do, however he stated time and time again that Wesley is an ordinary player who wouldn't succeed in the bigger leagues. We have already witnessed Sneijder score five goals from midfield thus far for Real. And I wouldn't call Sneijder a "mediocre" footballer. A mediocre footballer wouldn't score five goals and control Real's strings in midfield.

Either way, it's going to be difficult for Tiago to recover. I said it the first of September: if a player isn't playing by November, he's never going to be a true part of the team. Tiago should have been given more chances. I don't care how lacklustre he has been in training, he's world class and Ranieri should have done more to integrate him.
I agree, especially since Ranieri wanted Tiago in the first place. A manager who requests a player but finds out he doesn't know how to use him... oh dear.

well lets look at it from Ranieri's point of view, i can't comprehend that a coach requests a certain player than just puts him on the bench for no reason. That rant in the media changes that plan imo.

The club needs to put its foot down when dealing with situations like these. Should Ranieri play zebina because he said he was disappointed that he didn't play after his suspension ended against the viola ?

We all agree that he should've got his chance but the medium he used was not the best and its never the right way to go.

I am not agreeing with Ranieri, I have been calling for Tiago to start since the Reggina game but now things changed.
Tiago is quite the professional. He's one of the most classy professionals I've ever seen. If he comes out and tells us that something is wrong internally, I'm going to believe him. The guy has barely even played under one of the most experimental managers in football.
