Ranieri: “We need to react against Atalanta”
“We had an off night against Empoli; the positive thing is that we got a goal and now we have to react”
Manager Ranieri's press conference on the eve of the Juventus vs. Atalanta fixture was more focused on Thursday night's defeat than the match itself as journalists asked him to explain the sub-par performance in the Italian Cup: “We changed several players and I couldn't expect the team to play fluidly, but my players should have “ploughed the grass”, by running on it over and over. Instead it was Empoli's players who ploughed it and yet they'd also changed their line-up extensively. It hasn't been a step back, more of a missed chance; I gave people a chance, but they didn't take it… Never mind. We'll see if they'll get any others. Am I talking about Tiago? No, about the team in general. Tiago played well enough”.There are insistent rumours about the Portuguese player; allegedly he should be leaving in January, perhaps on loan: “No one's leaving here, maybe Buffon on loan, to gain experience... – Ranieri answered ironically – I already said a month ago that the squad is fine as it is”.
Now the Bianconeri immediately have to redeem themselves against Atalanta: “When you see a performance like the one at Empoli you can't be happy and now we have to face a very good team at its peak. They play tight, the way Del Neri likes, and it seems everything they try is a success at the moment. Moreover, they're really close to us in the table, so it'll be a difficult game and we'll have to give 100% if not more”.
A win against the team from Bergamo would be vital to maintain the same distance from Inter Milan and Roma, who have increased their lead after winning the matches against Lazio and Cagliari which had been postponed: “Inter Milan and Roma haven't ran away, but we always have to play at our best, without ever relaxing. We always have to be humble, determined, concentrated and very eager to do well; this is the only way we can keep up with the top teams, especially if they also make a few mistakes along the way”.
Ranieri's last comment didn't concern football, but the recent workplace accident which killed four people in Turin:
“Dying in the workplace is a terrible tragedy and we'll be observing a minute's silence to remember the victims. We are very close to the families hit by this tragic loss”.
