Juve Strong At Home
Juventus continue to impress on their return to top-flight football and last week picked up a deserved 0-0 draw at European Champions AC Milan.
The result helped consolidate their place in the top-four Champions League positions, but at the same time it sees them lose ground on league-leaders Inter and second-placed Roma.
Both of the top-two followed up weekend victories with midweek successes and Juve now trail the pair by eight and five points respectively.
Although the Bianconeri have proved that they can live with the big boys by holding both Inter and Roma to draws this season, a Scudetto challenge is now looking unlikely.
A win on Sunday against Atalanta is imperative if they are to avoid falling further behind. Claudio Ranieri’s men go into the game with the second best home record in Serie A.
Juve have won five, drawn one and lost one from their seven games, scoring 19 goals and conceding just three.
Atalanta Unbeaten Away
Atalanta have also exceeded expectations this term and moved up to sixth position (with a game in hand) in the table, following a stunning 5-1 thrashing of Napoli last week.
The Orobici have only lost twice this season and are looking odds-on to finish in the UEFA Cup positions if they can keep up their current form.
Only four teams – Inter, Roma, Juve and Napoli – have scored more goals than Atalanta this season, so this tie is intriguingly poised.
The key reason for Atalanta’s fine form has been evergreen midfielder Cristiano Doni. The 34-year-old has been one of the players of the season so far, scoring an incredible seven goals in just 11 appearances.
Doni has been showing the kind of form that won him a call-up to the Italian national team for the ill-fated World Cup in Japan and Korea in 2002.
However not everything has been rosy for the Nerazzurri this campaign. Their week 12 home match with Milan was abandoned after just eight minutes following crowd trouble, while striker Riccardo Zampagna, who had been in outstanding form, is set to leave in January after a punch-up with Coach Luigi Del Neri in training.
In 46 past meeting between Juventus and Atalanta in Turin, Juve have won 29, drawn 13 and lost just four times.
Indeed the last time Atalanta beat the Bianconeri away from home was in 1989, when Claudio Caniggia, a player who just months later would haunt Italy in their own World Cup, scored the only goal of the game.

TEAM NEWS
Juventus
Coach Claudio Ranieri rested a host of players during the Coppa Italia defeat to Empoli on Thursday night. Gianluigi Buffon, Giorgio Chiellini, Pavel Nedved and David Trezeguet were among a host of big names left at home.
They will all return on Sunday, while Ranieri has to choose whether Vincenzo Iaquinta, Alessandro Del Piero, or both, start with David Trezeguet up-front. The Tinkerman may launch a trident attack. Long-term injury victims Jean-Alain Boumsong and Jorge Andrade are still out.
Juventus (probable): Buffon; Zebina, Legrottaglie, Chiellini, Molinaro; Nocerino, Zanetti, Nedved; Del Piero; Trezeguet, Iaquinta
Atalanta
Former Milan midfielder Diego De Ascentis is available again after returning from suspension. Atalanta boss Luigi Del Neri is expected to make just one change from the team that thrashed Napoli last week, with De Ascentis replacing Tiberio Guarante.
Claudio Rivalta is still out, while Riccardo Zampagna has been frozen out of the squad after his bust up with Del Neri, and will leave in January.
Atalanta (probable): Coppola: Belleri, Carrozzieri, Capelli, Bellini; Ferreira Pinto, De Ascentis, Tissone, Langella; Doni; Floccari
PLAYERS TO WATCH
David Trezeguet (Juventus)
When a player has scored 11 times in just 14 Serie A games, it really is difficult to choose anyone else as the man to watch. Trezegol has made the best start to a club season in his entire career, and he was desperately unlucky to not score goal number 12 last week when he crashed the ball against the woodwork at Milan. Atalanta beware!
Cristiano Doni (Atalanta)
You only have to look at Doni’s goal tally for the season to realise what incredible form he is in. Seven goals in just 11 appearances this campaign make the former Sampdoria man a huge danger-man on Sunday. The 34-year-old is still one of the best attacking midfielders in Serie A.
PREDICTION
Atalanta will certainly provide a tough test for Juventus, but I expect the home side to pull through comfortably in the end.
Juventus 3-1 Atalanta
