Serie A Preview: Juventus – Udinese
Juventus (1st Serie A, 6 points) v Udinese (17th Serie A, 1 point)
When: Sunday, 16th September, kick-off 1500 local (CET)
Where: Stadio Olimpico, Turin
The Right Path
Juventus started their Serie A season in style as they won two games in a row in their initial two matchdays, thus returning to the top spot of the Italian topflight after an absence of a year following their demotion to Serie B.
Now for the Old Lady it is important to prove their consistency as they have no European cup games to think about and can give all their best to the Italian topflight. However, as was evident against Cagliari, it will not be an easy feat for the Bianconeri as they are still far from being on the same level of Milan, Inter or Roma.
In fact, Claudio Ranieri’s squad still seems to lack something in defence to be more solid and maybe a creative midfielder in order to ignite David Trezeguet’s incredible goal scoring ability. Still, improvements have occurred over the past month and that is very encouraging for the former Chelsea coach.
Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde
Probably saying that Udinese have been inconsistent in these first two matchdays is a huge understatement. The Friulani impressed against Inter at San Siro on the first matchday, with everyone believing that the Zebrette can compete for a Uefa Cup place this season thanks to some key individuals like Asamoah.
However, the squad was soon brought back to earth with a humiliating 5-0 defeat at home against newly promoted Napoli in the second matchday. Not very impressive by any standards and now the one million dollar question is: which Udinese side will face the Old Lady, the one admired against Inter or the embarrassing one which suffered the shocking home defeat against the Partenopei?
It’s still too early in the season to be able to make judgements on teams and their quality, but just like last season, the Friulani seem to suffer from the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde syndrome. At this rate, Coach Pasquale Marino will not have a long life at Udine.
Three Important Points
For Juventus this clash precedes the one against Roma of next weekend, and therefore the three points are a must if the Old Lady wants to hold on to the top spot for at least another week and go to the fourth matchday’s big match full of confidence and ready to take on the Giallorossi’s challenge.
Maybe the enthusiasm around Juventus’ first two wins of the season has gone overboard, with players and supporters targeting the league title, but if the Bianconeri can continue convincing critics and fans alike with other good performances and with more points, then yes the Old Lady can indeed go all the way!

Some problems for Claudio Ranieri in defence as Boumsong is injured, whereas Zebina is suspended following the slap he gave to the steward at Cagliari. The Bianconeri will also be without Marchionni who has been injured since the training camp.

Various players are out injured for the Friulani with Obodo, Felipe, Pinzi and De Martino being all important misses for Marino and his team.
Probable Formation (4-3-3): Chimenti, Mesto, Coda, Zapata, Dossena, Inler, D'Agostino, Sivok, Quagliarella, Asamoah, Di Natale
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Del Piero (Juventus)
Following his poor performance against France, the Juve fans will be hoping that Pinturicchio returns to his best form for the Bianconeri in order to aid his team to another win this weekend.
It would also help him prove his doubters wrong, who believe that he is on his way down in this part of his career.
Di Natale (Udinese)
The happy face of the Italian national team. Contrary to Del Piero, his experience with the Azzurri in the past week has been a very positive one and he will be hoping to continue building on it in Serie A.
What was starting to be a difficult season for the former Empoli forward could turn into his most important year ever.
PREDICTION
Udinese proved they can give a hard time to the big guns, but Juventus have no mid-week commitment next week therefore they can concentrate on this game and perform at their best against the Friulani to grab three other precious points.
