1. Pjanic is so crucial to this team.

2. Douglas Costa was supreme. He adds speed and directness to our otherwise stale attack.

3. Three man midfield is the way forward, the formation in the first half was awful.

4. MDS > Licht

Couldn't watch match but so much gloom and doom with the early posts in the live match thread. Did Mario score from the striker position? Seems to be what he has done forever but still #2 guy there behind Higgy.

Just from looking lineups and not even caring about their play but HAPPY to see Howedes and Claudio in there and SAD to see Licht gets playing time. He might be a legend to posters here but next time I see him on the pitch hopefully in will be in another jersey in 2018.

Terrible formation where too many roles were messed up. Dybala was too wide while Douglas Costa is supposed to be wide forced Mandzukic to leave his place in the middle and it got often filled by Lichtsteiner. Mind blown! Matuidi and Marchisio had to do a lot of running forward as well and another team would have slaughtered us on the counters with the middle sort of exposed. While we had a lot of possession in the first half we seemed not to be able to create proper chances. We improved drastically in the second when we started playing centrally and actually sending balls to our striker and it immediately led to a goal. When Pjanic came in for Howedes we actually looked like a functional team and I hope we use this formation more. I have always been a fan of the 4-3-2-1 especially with totally different players occupying the positions behind the striker where they either can play wide or centrally.

Buffon N.R

Barzagli 6.5
Benatia 7
Howedes 6.5

Lichtsteiner 6
Marchisio 6.5
Matuidi 6.5
Alex Sandro 6.5

Dybala 6
Douglas Costa 7.5

Mandzukic 7

De Sciglio 6.5
Pjanic 6.5
Sturaro N.R

I won't make massive judgements since it's Crotone, but even then we just saw a completely different game than against Benevento who are ten times worse. No defensive slip-ups, no panicking and solid calm playing.

I agree with overall ratings, only thing I'd change would be Dybala's grade. I'd give him 5.5 at best.

Benatia in both of them @Bianconero81
Benatia has been our best defender so far

:agree: since Morocco qualified for the WC, his confidence skyrocketed. If he can keep it up then our defense will look stellar

First half was an unimpressive bore but I think we had the right approach tonight. Team is low on confidence and crumbles when we concede so we went back to basics just kept possession and tried to avoid giving them anything. Happy with tonight, we gave Crotone no opportunity to spring a surprise (unlike how we have to inferior opposition so often this season). this 3-4-2-1 is not really something we want to do long term but for now I like it to rebuild confidence. Not leaking stupid goals and opportunities is at least an improvement from where we have been so far this season. Furthermore I think adding Higuain into the fray will be a further improvement over what we saw tonight. Maybe we can turn this into a functional christmas tree at some point :baus:

3-4-2-1 to stifle strong opposition, 4-3-2-1 to attack in most games

Some more things

- Costa should definitely play, we lack creativity elsewhere and the danger and unpredictability he provides is needed right now. He is also, by some distance, the best crosser we have on the team.

- Benatia looked a totally different player in the 3 man defense. Think he benefits from being able to play much more aggressively and not have to worry about being punished for mistakes.

- Nice to have Marchisio back but he is no substitute for Pjanic. We need Pjanic on the field pretty much at all times.

Not really sure what to say about Dybala. he may not be a winger but he was no CAM either so its not like we are sacrficing much from him to play in this manner

did you see what happened as soon as we had 3 man mid!
I realize that we can dominate the midfield of crotone with 3 mids but thats not really the point is it? Do you really think the lineup is based on how we can best beat crotone? We can do the Conte tactic where we try to perfect the lineup and get screwed in big games bc we cant adapt or change at all. But maybe you are on to something. Stop experimenting in games like this and come out early and thump them. Wait we did that anyway. Not sure what your point is. What lineup do you think we should move to?

So do we build a team around Dybala so he can play at his best or do we build a team that starts winning again at his sacrifice?

I don't really know what to do with Dybala.

A 2 man midfield is sterile offensively and it is weak defensively. Not to mention what it does to the likes of Dybala and whoever plays as a CF.
3 man midfield we are on a much higher tempo, much more incisive and allowed us to create more.

It's not about crotone it's about playing well, fuck i care about crotone, we shouldn't be waiting for 2nd half to score. Should attack the jugular from the get go

Don't believe this will last, he'll come good. When you have a player of Dybala's caliber you make the team around him. It's not like we're not getting by if he has less good performances, benching him would be something done out of frustration not based on what's better for the team
