Lippi relies on 'Old Guard'
Sunday 25 January, 2004
Marcello Lippi's men take on giant killers Empoli this evening and the Coach hopes David Trezeguet can join the list of long-standing Juve stars.
“We have not changed as many players over the years as Roma and Milan,” explained Lippi, “because our veterans still have a real hunger for success.”
The Scudetto now seems to be a three-horse race and January is traditionally when the Bianconeri hit top gear.
However, their trip to Empoli is given another layer following their shock 1-0 win over Inter last week.
“The Tuscans are on fine form and have rediscovered their enthusiasm with two consecutive victories. The return of Igli Vannucchi is also crucial to get their system working again.”
Juve hammered them 5-1 at the Delle Alpi in Week 1, but Lippi denies they will bring back that 4-2-3-1 system with Fabrizio Miccoli out wide.
“We haven’t used that tactic for many weeks now,” explained the Coach, “ and won’t start again now. All we need is concentration.”
Enzo Maresca is out with an injury, but the attention is turned to David Trezeguet following a breakthrough in contract renegotiations.
“When he does put pen to paper on a new deal that will undoubtedly be a big psychological boost for David.”
“However, he always knew the club was putting its faith in his future, but with everything signed and sealed he will be able to play in a more relaxed state of mind.”
The Frenchman is not the only player involved in contract extension talks, as the ‘Old Guard’ will carry on at the Delle Alpi.
“Players like Alessandro Del Piero, Trezeguet and Pavel Nedved are world class stars and it is normal for a club to try and keep them for as long as possible.”
“But there are others who may not have quite as much quality, such as Antonio Conte and Ciro Ferrara, who give so much more to a side in terms of charisma, leadership and experience. These men represent for us what Paolo Maldini and Alessandro Costacurta are for Milan.”
Lippi also commented on the year that has passed since the death of Honorary Juventus President Gianni Agnelli.
“He was a constant presence and we all miss him very much, but in a sense he never left as we all keep his wonderful outlook on life and football in our hearts.”
Meanwhile, Brazilian club Flamengo have confirmed they are in advanced negotiations with Juve's young Uruguayan Ruben Olivera.
