I won't cry about the 2018 tie though. Apart from the Marcelo handball we only got ourselves to blame for that exit. We played so much better than Real over two legs and created chances on a silver platter, but couldn't convert anything. This was especially the case in the home leg. Then we had Rafinha making the worst brainfart in this decade.

Fucking depressing to watch as it was a match where we should have battered them in the first leg.

In 2017 the ref made shady calls for both clubs, Ribery getting a penalty that wasn't there for example.

Yeah I was pretty disappointed with Bayern in 2018, they really let Heynckes down who had set them up brilliantly in both legs. James kicking the ball out for a Real injury late in the second leg just summed it up for me. But aside from the Marcelo handball Bayern had atleast 2 other clear penalties not given in the first leg alone.

In 2017 one mistake was made in favor for Bayern in the first leg. In the second the ref had like 10 "mistakes" all going in Real's favor, including 2 clear as day offside goals which I've never seen happen in a big CL match. The match was a disgrace.

Var is there to provide assistance to referees. They still make the final call but unlike before where they could use various excuses for a wrong call, Var leaves them without any. So if a ref makes a wrong call, after rewatching an incident, is Var to blame? Or that referee isnt up for the task in the first place and should get suspended. Governing boddies now actually have the tools to eliminate lousy referees, because rules cant be interpreted differently.

That was also a disgrace from a refereeing standpoint.

Yes just off memory Suarez and Neymar both dived for penalties while PSG were robbed of a clear penalty via a foul from Mascherano on Cavani.

To me handball incidents were dodgy, is it intentional or not, close proximity of the shot, etc.. but recently it has been ironed out, at least in Italy. I feel it has still to do with referees not getting clear guidance, which allowed them to interpret the rules, while they really shouldnt be.

I understand this . Unfortunately we can't eliminate subjectivity from the referees minds .
But as @Vlad said we can ipotetically churn the good referees from the bad ones because they no longer have excuses when they make bad calls.
