I don't think that he was scared of competition, but he's seen how Cassano and Owen around that time failed miserably at Madrid.

Maradona won the WC on 1986 with the weakest Argentina ever, won Scudetto and Coppa Italia in 1987 with freakin Napoli when Serie A was by far the best League out there, UEFA Cup in 1989 when it was a relevant competition with Juve, Bayern, inter, Benfica etc participating, another Scudetto in 1990 and another WC final the same year. No other player would have done it with the same Argentina and Napoli teams
