Juventus 2 - 1 Messina
Juve survived a late scare to end Messina's unbeaten record and stretch out a five-point lead at the top of the table.
This was an unlikely choice for top of the table clash pre-season, but going into Week 6 newly promoted Messina were only two points behind the Bianconeri.
Juve were at the centre of an injury crisis with David Trezeguet out until January following shoulder surgery and Alessandro Del Piero still sidelined, but Mauro Camoranesi was able to recover from a bruised calf to start. This left just two strikers at Fabio Capello's disposal, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Uruguayan Marcelo Zalayeta.
7,000 Giallorossi fans made the trip up from Sicily for this game and both teams were unbeaten going in. The visitors had the first chance after three minutes when Gianluigi Buffon got down to palm Riccardo Zampagna's long-range strike round the post.
At the other end Marco Storari punched out a swinging Pavel Nedved free kick, then Camoranesi and Zalayeta combined before Emerson eventually fired it wide of the target.
Zampagna had timid penalty appeals for a Jonathan Zebina shirt-tug waved away, but Messina were rarely dangerous.
Emerson won back the ball in midfield and set up Nedved for an angled drive that was parried, but Juve were beginning to take control.
That pressure paid off after 25 minutes when Camoranesi's cross from the right was nodded in by Marcelo Zalayeta. The Uruguayan has been a squad player for many years and often delivers when called upon, as he also scored the winner against Udinese last week.
A scuffle broke out on the stroke of half-time when Coppola claimed he had been struck by Nedved, but replays suggest any contact was purely accidental.
The Czech tried to get back at Messina in the best possible way, as his fierce drive was palmed out with some difficulty.
Salvatore Sullo came on for the second half and within a minute he had placed a fine cross to the back post that almost took Buffon by surprise. Juve also had a great chance early on when Zalayeta fired Zebina's cross over the bar.
Arturo Di Napoli combined well with Parisi and fell under a challenge from Fabio Cannavaro, but his penalty appeals were waved away.
Within moments Juventus doubled their lead at the other end of the pitch. Zlatan Ibrahimovic pulled it back for Nedved to side-foot intelligently into the far corner of the net with his right foot.
Messina did not give in, as they had fought back from 3-1 down to Roma for a 4-3 victory, and got back into the match on 68 minutes with a splendid goal. Sullo's cross took both Cannavaro and Thuram by surprise, allowing Riccardo Zampagna to turn and volley past a helpless Buffon.
This was only the second Serie A goal Juventus have conceded this season after Cristian Zaccardo's effort for fellow Sicilians Palermo.
Juve tried to put the win in the bag with a fine move that saw Nedved roll a cross in for Zalayeta, but his tap-in was splendidly smothered by a Storari reaction save.
It was his last contribution, as Zalayeta was replaced by Ruben Olivera, while Messina threw on Japanese international Atsushi Yanagisawa and ex-Juve man Nicola Amoruso.
Alessandro Parisi had a quiet game, but his venomous free kick was only kept out by the back of his own teammate Di Napoli. Soon after Zampagna hooked down the ball for Yanagisawa and the Japanese midfielder's finish was off target.
Nedved's powerful strike from distance was spilled by Storari, but there were no other Juve men there to take advantage. Buffon also had a scare when Amoruso nearly got on the end of Parisi's cross.
