Juventus v Messina: Preview
For a team that has climbed many mountains in order to return to Italy's top flight after a 44-year absence, there is no better reward than a date at Juventus.
Unbeaten Messina have already pulled off a giant-killing double by beating both AC Milan and Roma on their way to second place in the standings and the Sicilians will be dreaming of a hat-trick when they face the Serie A leaders.
"My players have discovered that even in Serie A, you play 11 against 11," was the explanation given by Giallorossi president Pietro Franza for his team's dream start to the campaign.
More than 10,000 Messina fans will travel to the north of Italy to witness what they hope will be their side taking top spot, with their heroes now only two points behind Juve.
"To have more than 8,000 fans supporting the team will be something new," said Franza. "In many respects, Messina are bottom of many tables but we have been able to change the atmosphere in the city.
"We are living an incredible dream considering that only one year ago we went through a very difficult time being in the last position in Serie B."
The man responsible for the team's revival, coach Bortolo Mutti, who guided the club to promotion, has been able to maintain the winning habit in spite of the team failing to make any big summer signings.
"We analysed the fact that many top-flight squads had made many changes to their teams without getting much in return," said Franza.
"To maintain the unity of a group that has contributed to the team's successes in recent years is at times worth so much more than any big signing."
Their opponents, however, certainly expect to get their money's worth from their recent reinforcements - Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Fabio Cannavaro and Emerson.
With Juve's top striker David Trezeguet set to be out of action until February as he undergoes shoulder surgery, and with captain Alessandro Del Piero and midfielder Mauro Camoranesi also injured, there is even more pressure on the new arrivals to deliver.
"There is no reason why the club should return to the transfer market," said Trezeguet. "The club have made three fantastic signings and I believe they shouldn't worry - these players can help us win."
A victory on Saturday will provide a morale boost for Fabio Capello's men who face their most challenging Champions League clash next week when they host Bayern Munich.
But without goalscoring machine Trezeguet, whose seven goals have been an important factor in the Bianconeri's unbeaten run both in the league and Europe, Capello will be forced to play with attacking duo Marcelo Zalayeta and Ibrahimovic in the next few months.
It was Zalayeta's header against Udinese which allowed the Bianconeri to defend their lead at the top of Serie A.
Capello can also take comfort from this weekend's opponents, who have scored just as many league goals as Juve (11) without any big name strikers.
But the absence of injured Brazilian midfielder Mamede could hinder Messina, who will also be without fellow middleman Luca Fusco, who is struggling with a problematic thigh.
Attacking midfielder Ruben Oliveira is set to replace the injured Camoranesi in Juve's starting line-up.
