In the end it comes down as a personal preference. In case of lotr trilogy I would put it backwards rotk>two towers>fellowship
There is not much between them, as I consider it the greatest trilogy of all time.

We could consider lotr a movie in 3 parts ,but if the first doesn't perform financially we would've had a standalone movie.
Also I like many didn't know it was a book adaption at the time of release.

I'm not sure about that. It was shot continuously for over a year so the three would have been released regardless, as they cost hundreds of millions of dollars to make.
I imagine that contractually they would also not have been allowed to only release the Fellowship, it would have made a mockery of the Tolkien estate and New Line Cinema.
