THE GIOVINCO QUESTION: I meant for this to have its own post, because I think it’s a very important debate, but with the packed fixtures list I figured it was important to have a preview up about the first Champion’s League game. It isn’t a discussion on his recent comments, I understand his frustration, but about his role.
To me, Diego’s performance against Roma confirmed that perhaps Giovinco is not set out to be trequartista. The two goals he scored, I’m not sure Giovinco would have, he probably would have been knocked over by the defenders and taken a free kick, he doesn’t have the kind of power that Diego used to hold off the defense. As such, he gets knocked over too often and has trouble staying on his feet. Against Lazio, he was muscled off the ball a few times, but he seemed to thrive when he had space and drifted out to the flanks.
If he was moved up front to Del Piero’s position, he’d have a bit more space but more importantly, other players couldn’t be so foully with him as they’d be conceding free kicks in prime locations or even penalties. But from what I’ve seen, he doesn’t have a strikers killer-eye for goal, he is definitely more of a provider than a poacher.
So where is his ideal position? Is it as Ranieri saw it, on the flanks? Is it as a trequartista, or as a striker? (He gave some of his best performances last season as a winger) Is his mediocre performances at trequartista due to a lack of form, or his size? The counter-arguments are that he hasn’t been given a lengthy run out in the team, perhaps he could improve there. He is young, so many of these skills, such as becoming more of a goal-scorer, these could be learned. But some traits are inherent, like his size. Another possibility would be to convert him to a regista, like what was done with Andrea Pirlo. Giovinco has great vision, though it would waste his dribbling ability. So to close out the preview, where do you think Giovinco’s ideal role is?

). I think we should try him in the 3 man midfield. He is quick, excellent in movement from side to side and can dribble out of just about any "sticky" situation. We should try it, we have enough muscle in our team to let him flourish.
he needs to bulk up a bit, he is more succesful in under 21's because they are generally not as big, thats a guess lol, just because he is small doesnt mean he can have a strong core and be quite strong. just because he isnt like diego doesnt mean he isnt a trequartista

Without any doubt he is made for the left or the right side of the 4-3-3. alla Messi (before the bashing i'm not comparing, is it a rhaym?

he needs space so he can face the defance face on, he dosent have the strangth to play with the back to the defander and he cant recive the ball in a tight space cause he will get out muscled. his main skill i think is cutting inside and crossing.
He does lack at the moment the finishing touch that a AMC needs, altough i really think that with a bit more work and confidence he as a very good shooting ability, he did scored some fantastic long range kicks ( just watch the Empoli- Rome game, i saw it live and i fell in love with the kid).
He need more confidence to try shooting more often, he will score a stunner sonner or later.
At the moment i dont think the AMC is the role for him, watch the game against Bordeaux, I think that game will give us some answers because they play with two DM's, if he will be able to find space betwin them the its a good sign, but i think he will spend more time running to the flank to find space then playing in the hole.
I'm sure he will have a great game anyway, I realy belive in this kid. but we need to see him play more often to see where is the sweet spot for him.

Giovinco can`t play on the flanks without proper cover as he should work hard to improve his defensive skills.
He can`t play as second striker as his finishing is not good enough for that position also he needs to gain some muscels.
As a playmaker behind the strikers he can but still needs to work on his shooting and ofcourse his muscels BUT there is also Diego at this position and as long as Diego is healthy he would play as he is simply a better player!
I guess if Giovinco want to play regulary he got 2 options
1) Hope that Ferrara changes his tactic to 4-5-1 or 4-4-2 with 2 playmakers
2) gain some muscels work hard on his shooting and he might be our starting second striker
I defenitely believe he has the potential to be great and maybe on of the best in the world but he has to work very very hard in order to accomplish that

Henry is a forward who can play a bit behind the type of player I suggested
Iaquinta is a pure forward and can`t play that role
DP can play this role BUT he could only play on the left+ he is too slow to play this role IMO
C.Ronaldo could play this role but he is not available Messi could play that role but he is with Barcelona
Can you mention another player who can play that right side role?
