Blog: Greed or glory?

Sebastian Giovinco is certainly talented, but Steve Wilson thinks he should prove himself in a Juventus shirt first before demanding a wage hike

I have no doubt that Sebastian Giovinco is a very talented player. Even the most casual calcio observer must be aware of that - with his goal for Empoli against Roma last season and his Exocet strike for the Italy Under-21 side against Honduras at the Olympics appearing as character references. However, to date, the pint-sized playmaker has played just 38 games in Serie A - and only three for Juventus. So how can his agent justify asking for his basic wage to be doubled?

There is a huge difference between being the big fish in Empoli's garden pond and the tiny stickleback in Juventus' glamorous aquarium. While a goal at the Olympics, if you believe the majority of fans, isn't worth the net it ripples. Yes, the Turin-native is predicted to become one of Italy's greats in the future, but how many players have we heard that about before? Obviously no club is going to say their new prodigy 'might be a star, but then again he might turn out to be duff'.

For me a player has to actually go out on the big stage and make his name, show the fans what he can do and earn his wage. We have already seen in the Premier League the negative effect of handing young players ridiculous wages, and I for one think Giovinco needs to get his head set on breaking into Claudio Ranieri's immediate plans and learning about the professional game from masters like Alex Del Piero and Pavel Nedved rather than worrying about his bank balance.

The claim made by his agent, who, let's face it, is more concerned about getting his oily palms on his cut of Seba's pay rise, is that he deserves the same kind of wage as youngsters like Mario Balotelli and Giuseppe Rossi. Okay, so would that be the same Balotelli who fought his way into the first XI of last year's Scudetto winning Inter side? And is it the same Rossi who netted 11 goals for Villarreal as they secured second spot in La Liga? Seems like they have proven their worth…

I am maybe being a little harsh on the 21-year-old, nobody really knows who, behind the scenes, is driving this grasp for more cash from La Vecchia Signora's purse. But if it is not the player then he should really inform his agent to keep his trap shut. Nothing will turn fans off a player quicker than him displaying open greed. And how quick would they be to get on his back if his wage increase was not followed by immediate Lionel Messi-style performances on the pitch?

Of course, the agent will no doubt claim that if Juve don't pay someone else - Arsenal? - will, but what price do you put on the valuable experience of growing up on the Bianconeri training fields? I hope that he has some good advisors who will make him realise that. It is time for Formica Atomica to get on with convincing Ranieri to give him his chance, then we will see if he is good enough for the highest level. If money is all that he loves then that is what he'll receive - but only after he has earned it.

the journo is right, but Seba also has to be given the chance to prove his worth...can't see how he can do that by keeping his tiny arse on the bench

I doubt it. I think Gio's agent sat down, gave him a good talk and convinced him that he was being paid less than he deserves. Either way, It's his agent's influence without a doubt.

I agree that his agent is probably who put this idea in his head, however it's a big mistake to be controlled by his agent, anyways I hope this stupid contract is signed as soon as possible

an assist in his first start, and created quite a lot of chances for our forwards. Giovinco did in 1 game more than Nedved has done in the few games he played in. That's it. No more Nedved as a starter. Giovinco for every match please.

I told you guys before the season started that Giovinco will bench Neddy before the end of September.
