Why the hell would you want to field Giovinco as a deep-lying playmaker? What is he going to do, dribble the ball around everybody back there as opposed to further up the pitch? It's not like he's a fantastic long ball launcher like Xabi or Pirlo, you know.

Some of these ideas make me think I'm watching a movie with Jim Carey and Jeff Daniels.

Haha that article, it was simply a training match between ranks. Del Piero has done that before in training as well.

Players like Pirlo, Xabi and to a slightly less extent Xavi need a lot of protection to play their role effectively, imagine Giovinco..

He can't. Giovinco isn't some sort of magnificent passer. He's best taking on players 1v1 around the opposition 18 and sliding in through balls, not long balls from 30 yards out.

Might as well stop talking about it because I find this idea to be one of the dumbest in a long while.

I can't believe there was even a serious discussion about fielding Giovinco as a defensive playmaker, is this so we can free up the support striker role for Melo?

Gio should get some serious playing time, I am tired of seeing his talent wasted... And how can the coach expect him to be ready for the big football games when he doesn't get any playtime anyway...

I would disagree, IMO he's one of the best passers of the ball probably in the whole league but the idea of using him as a deep-lying playmaker is indeed dump....
