Btw, there are lots of posters and fundraisers in Lisbon here. After all, Ukrainians are the second largest national group of immigrants here after Brazilians.

But I’m even finding businesses decorating their windows like this…

At this point I see this (large scale war) stopping only if a common deadly enemy appears and there seems to be only one - a virus. I surely won't be surprised if we see a new pandemic that scares everyone, either a super corona mutation like Donbasbat or some new thing popping up.

I just don't get how can Balkans be pro Putin , what the fuck
Depends where on Balkan. Countries where the Russian influence is strong like in Serbia, then yes. More primitive Croats in rural parts arent much different either. You will hear a lot of whateaboutism, but America, but Nato, etc.... Among more educated population, you wont find many Putin appologists.

The renewed JCPOA negotiation are starting this week.

Won't suprise me if the russians blow them up so the west will also have a nucler Iran to think about.

Not only that, but it prevents Iran’s oil of reaching the market. In fact there are theories out there that Russia has been sabotaging the negotiations all these months. Russia envoy painted a rosy picture of the negotiations in his tweets, which were quickly denied by Iranians and western countries alike.

Same thing in Bolivia. Poorly educated plebs are pro commie party in the country, and in this case, they're Putin apologists too.

I have way too many "aha moments" when I hear about ignorant populations in other countries. They're all almost the same thing.

Yeah it will give them a lot of leverage with the west as a needed mediator.

Didn't even consider the oil angle of this. Makes total sense and the whole thing even more likely.
Fun times we live in.

That's really reductive though. Racists are everywhere. They're always going to have their opinions, but that doesn't mean they're the only perspective. Focusing on just the opinions of the racists is like focusing on just the opinions of the Chinese or the Chechens. You get what you sample.

Because this isn't about some forced appeal for sympathy as the narrator suggests. There's even a double standard within Ukraine itself if you take it that far: nobody reacted anything like this when the very same country had Crimea annexed by Russia in 2014. That wasn't because of racism, anti-Arab sentiment, etc. So what's different now?

It's because of the risk involved in stepping in for portions of Georgia vs Crimea ... vs the entire nation of Ukraine, which was a country with nukes until the 1994 Budapest Memorandum. But it's not even a question of Ukraine. Even Putin said it himself before the invasion: this is about an individual wanting to militarily force his will to refashion the lives of an entire continent and even world.

That's what makes this different. Sadly, people are investing in lame narratives like this who think they are being questioning geniuses when instead they are just displaying their localized ignorance of the bigger puzzle.
I see your point, I say Putin got what he deserves and I say keep it coming. Every story has two sides and have to take into consideration their perspective it might not be true but you have to find out what's right instead of pushing your own agenda blindly. Everybody lies even the west. Also you can draw parallels with multiple events in the past where there wasn't that strong of a reaction, where was the reaction or sanctions when the US(Nato) invaded Afghanistan for 20 years or Iraq under false pretenses. No one from EU or any other country said a word about that. That's the issue.

interesting interview, Desember 2021.

Even tho Putins arguments are clearly bullshit (about not being interested in conflict etc), this seems like a very "neutral" stance compared to later quotes from him:

This interview leaves me to think that there must have been a huge dissonance/barrier between NATO/EU and Russia that ultimately led to diplomacy breaking down completely.

Normal diplomatic talks would have resulted in a some sort of compromise and should have been very much possible with each part reaching a mutual benefit of some sort. This conflict was "discussed" for almost 10 years but still they failed to find any sort of solution.

Ultimately, with these enormous political motivations of greed/expansionism etc hanging in the background, real diplomacy was never actually even an option this time.

My conclusion is that Putin must have been lying constantly in earlier interviews or moving his stance to an extreme in the actual negotations, because his view in these videos/interviews are quite "mild" compared to what was reported actually happening in the real negotations and the actual terms that was reported later.

This also answers the matter (or rather further speculates it) that a lot of people were taken by surprise by the invasion: it seems like the Russian tone was changing very agressively from the start of 2022 compared to earlier statements.

Also, im not sure when Russia started to ramp up the troops on the Ukranian border to an extreme, but it felt like it was happening very fast (unsure, happy to be corrected about this)

I wish that we treated the lives of Georgians and Iraqis better, let alone Palestinians. And Crimeans. That's my limited opinion. I even think that the US withdrawal from Afghanistan is framed entirely wrong as a legacy of American dead and wasted money instead of the very Afhganis who had suffered so much death and waste only to have a puppet government take up space for so many years.

Yes, there are lies in the west. There are lies in the east too. Let's not forget we are humans nevertheless, and humans always do human things.

But people are talking about nuclear annihilation and mutually assured destruction again now. Russia has deployed 90% of its forces to invade and take over a sovereign nation, with promises of firing squads and civilian bombing into submission. Some of that will feel like normal life in the West Bank. But this is much, much bigger than that. If NATO and US planes tangle with Russian ones over this, there is nowhere to hide on this planet from the fallout.

I agree, the stakes are high, one small event could set it off and we're all fucked.

76% of the Balkans territory is NATO. The Balkans are: Bulgaria, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Bosnia, Kosovo, Albania, almost entire Greece, big parts of Croatia, and small parts of Slovenia, Romania, as well as European Turkey. Only Serbia, Bosnia and Kosovo aren't in NATO and the last two would like to be there.
