First of all lets agree on a simple fact, Our defense sucks and there is now way we are going to face the likes of Zlatan, Kaka and Totti with such a backline.

According to press we are linked mainly with two defenders: Meira and Hienze and it seems almost certain we will land one of them within the next few days but is Fernando and Gabriel the only valid alternatives around?

1) Coloccini: cheaper, younger and most importantly familiar with Andrade style of play as he did already partner him with Deportivo. I would choose him ahead of Hienze anyday while his price might be more resonable than Meira.

2) Mertesacker: I have always liked defenders from Germany as I believe they are second best to Italian, this guy is young with amazing physical abilities (196cm) and he is already better than Metzelder... I'd choose him ahead of Hienze and Meira without thinking twice.

3) Mexes: You will all say he is way too expensive... hmmm is 15€ Meira a cheap option?? if we are willing to spend this amount on Meira I think it would be crazy not to spend 20€ (Roma will most likely sell for such fee) on someone like Mexes.

4) Cris: I'm not a big fan of him, still he might be a cheaper option than Meira and a more reliable than Heinze.

5) Kompany: Yes he is an injury blown player, and yes he is one of Europe's premier talents as well, we can have him for around 10€.

What do you think?? Do you have any other candidates or ideas??

I def agree with your call on the current lineup (esp/even with Chiellini) we will get creamed next year without at least one more if not two defenders..

With Chivu gone Roma aren't selling Mexes to another rival and Cris is a bit old and hardly a rock in any event.

1 or 2 best options IMO, leaning toward Coloccini given his previous partnership with Andrade/he's half Italian.. Though I like your chat on Mertesacker I haven't seen him enough to judge at all but Kohler did do well for us so German is good too..

Does really look like we are shooting for Meira/Heinze though I feel and this could turn out well.. Mind you as much as Meira's going to be.. Barzagli anyone!?

We were interested in Cris but Lyon said no so forget him. No way are Roma selling Mexes after letting Chivu go. Coloccini? I'd rather have Heinze who is more experienced. Mertesacker would be an interesting option.

Senderos has been mentioned and he would be a decent addition to the squad. Hopefully we tie up a deal for Heinze because we could use someone with his experience in our defence.

Coloccini is a better overall defender than Heinze... it is quiet normal few ppl will notice this fact since the former play for Deportivo while Heinze play for Man Utd.

By the way... I do believe Coloccini is as good as Gabi Milito if not slightly better.

Is it me or has Coloccini never lived up to his potential? Even Milan decided to let him go.
I think he is injury prone, and this has caused him to live up to it. I think he would have been great if not for the injuries.

dun be surprise that our board won't be buying new defender.. they are simply stubborn and conservative.
No, they're not. They don't get half the credit they deserve.

    Juve turn to Godin?
    Thursday 2 August, 2007
Uruguayan international stopper Diego Godin is being linked with a move to Juventus after announcing he intends to play in Europe.

The 21-year-old central defender impressed as the Celeste reached the semi-finals of the Copa America and has attracted interest from several top sides, allegedly including Real Madrid and Inter.

Sources suggest that the Old Lady have already made a generous offer to Godin’s club Nacional and that the ex-Cerro man will shortly discuss personal terms with the Bianconeri.

Whatever his destnation, it is certain that the talented youngster will not be plying his trade in Uruguay’s Primera Division next term.

“I trained with Nacional in the morning and then said farewell to my teammates and the everyday staff here,” Godin revealed.

“Something like this brings strange emotions and it all happened very fast. Overall I’m very happy because this is what I have always been waiting for.”

Juve may yet face competition from La Liga outfit Villarreal who are also reported to be tracking Godin and preparing a bid.
