Ronaldinho wins Ballon d’Or Monday 28 November, 2005

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Barcelona ace Ronaldinho has succeeded Milan striker Andriy Shevchenko as the European Footballer of the Year.

The Brazilian becomes France Football’s 50th Golden Ball winner after netting more votes, cast by a select group of European based football writers, than Chelsea’s Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard of Liverpool.

Ronaldinho was awarded 225 points, Lampard 148 and Gerrard, who captained his side to Champions League glory over Milan, gained 142.

Arsenal forward Thierry Henry – formerly of Juventus – was fourth, just ahead of previous winner Shevchenko.

Rossoneri teammate Paolo Maldini was the highest placed Italian in sixth, with Inter’s Adriano and Zlatan Ibrahimovic of Juve coming in seventh and eighth respectively. Kaka of Milan was ninth.

Ronaldinho becomes the third Brazilian to win the award for his performances at the Nou Camp, after Ronaldo in 1997 – who subsequently joined Inter – and Rivaldo in 1999.

The Samba star also won the 2004 FIFA Player of the Year and the inaugural FIFpro prize earlier this year.

Carragher in the top 20 and no Cannavaro? grrr

'bout Ronnie: All hail king Ronaldinho. he is the type of players who make people go to stadiums and dream. He's the best. Not only because of his tremendous skills, but also his beautiful vision of the game, his fair-play and his smile. This guy earns millions, but still, he's playing football like a kid on the street. He's enjoying it.

That should be a lesson for very player takes it too seriously:

Football is just a game. That's all

I keep on wondering why didn't Maldini won this award. If there's a player who deserves this Golden Ball then It's Paolo Mladini.

Because it's a player of the year award, not a lifetime achievement award.

Oh really? Thank you for opening my mind.

I think he proved enough in his career that he deserve this award. I'm not talking about his life-time Footballer, But there was period where Maldini was really inform and World's best Defender, nobody can deny that. But maybe because he's a defender, he shouldn't take this award .......

I hate this, credits goes for players like Ronaldinho,Zidane,Lampard,Kaka But not to Puyol,Cannavaro,Maldini or Nesta. This is BS.

he has been a great defender for 20 years, but was there one particular year in which you would've said wow he's the best player of the world?

of course this is very subjective, but you know that attacking minded players are more likely to win these kind of awards.

No, Not really. But thats because Media and the Press they never praise or give credits to the defenders comparing to the Midfielders or Attackers. For an Example" Cannavaro could save our asses more than 6times in a game but then Neddy scores in min 87 and win us the game" People would keep their eyes on him and praise him while they Forget what Canna or the likes of Canna did in a game, killing themselves just to save their team."
