Roma punished for derby chaos
Friday, 02 April 2004

AS Roma will have to play two home matches at a neutral venue after the disciplinary committee of the Italian Football Federation (FIGG) increased their punishment for the crowd trouble that caused the abandonment of the derby against S.S. Lazio on 21 March.

Fine increased
The Giallorossi - third in Serie A - will play the matches against AC Chievo Verona and Empoli FC at a neutral venue and have already announced that they will face Chievo on 10 April at US Città di Palermo's Renzo Barbera stadium in Sicily. Following an appeal against their initial sanctions, Roma also had their fine increased from €3,000 to €10,000. The derby against Lazio will be replayed on 14 April .

Birindelli signs on
Staying in Italy, right-back Alessandro Birindelli has become the fourth Juventus FC player to sign a new contract in the past eight days, following the example set by Ciro Ferrara, Gianluca Zambrotta and Alessio Tacchinardi. The 29-year-old Italian international, who joined the Bianconeri in 1997 from Empoli FC, has agreed terms until 2007.

Cause Lazio fans would have punched Totti instead of trying to talk to him :D

No seriously: safety is the responsibility of the home playing team. They're the ones organising after all. No matter which fan group exactly starts the trouble, the home team will pay the price for crappy organisation.

i dont want to start a new thread and this topic at least is roma related. something interesting found on soccerage pages

AS Roma has been accused of forging bank guarantees in order to get a license for the Serie A. The Italian F.A. was not going to give them a license due to their extreme debts. The the club suddenly came up with a bank guarantee for a tremendous amount of money.

This bank guarantee was fake. Newspaper Corriere dello Sport brought this to light and published the bank guarantees in the paper. It wasn't even a good forgery, but a piss-poor one. It had a bank address and phone numbers on it that don't even exist.

AS Roma's accounts were confiscated today and there will be an investigation to get to the bottom of this. It is a fact that the bank guarantee was forged, but the question is whether Roma president, Mr Sensi, can be found guilty of this. Of course he denies everything. He says he's a "victim" of the bank that issued the guarantee.

However, the Corriere dello Sport claims that there is proof of a payment made by Sensi, giving someone instructions to make the forgery.

If AS Roma and Mr Sensi are found guilty of this AS Roma will be thrown back to the Serie B at the very least. It could be a lot worse, too: an Italian basketball club was punished for a very similar thing. They lost their over-all license to play in the Italian basketball league and went bankrupt immediately, because they simply were no longer allowed to play.

I predicted something like this happening, with Roma failing to find a suitable new owner for the club which would pay all of its debts.

This is unfortunate though. Roma has been demonstrating excellent game this year. A strong competitor will be lost. There will be a bunch of EXCELLENT players up for grabs, many of which may land with Inter and Milan.

well roma should try and sell some players now before it is too late
Yeah, if this happens it will be like an exploded bomb.

Think about it... Panucci, Dacourt, Montella, Cassano, Totti, Lima, Emerson, Tomassi, Chivu, Zebina, Samuel, Candela... Fabio Capello... all FOR SALE.

This will overflow the market! Supply goes up, demand stays the same... Prices go down! :D
