Perrotta reveals Roma doubts Saturday 18 March, 2006

Simone Perrotta has been the driving force behind Roma’s revival and returned to the Italy squad, but confirms he was all set to leave in the summer.
“I didn’t think I was going to stay here this season,” he told Sky Italia. “When the fans insulted me at the summer get together, I thought it was best I walk away. Coach Luciano Spalletti convinced me to stay and win back their hearts.”
The former Chievo midfielder had a difficult time in the capital before Spalletti adopted a new tactical system that made the most of his talents.
“He asked me to adopt a Trequartista role in my own way and in a position that I really like. It has made a world of difference to Roma and to my career.”
His form has been so impressive, especially during the Serie A record 11-match winning streak, that he earned a recall to the Azzurri squad.
“I certainly hope to be a part of the side travelling to Germany for the World Cup. With Francesco Totti and Daniele De Rossi we can represent Roma’s form this season and take that to the Italy team.”
However, injuries have finally begun to take their toll on the Giallorossi, who were unlucky to be knocked out of the UEFA Cup by Middlesbrough on away goals midweek.
With Totti, Vincenzo Montella, Shabani Nonda and Cristian Chivu dealing with long term setbacks and Philippe Mexes suspended for Sunday’s clash with Messina, they also have a goalkeeping crisis to contend with.
Alexander Doni is unlikely to recover in time from a shoulder injury, while Gianluca Curci is also not yet in full training due to a strained pectoral muscle. The only other options are 20-year-old youth team shot-stopper Pietro Pipolo and former Messina flop Dimitrios Eleftheropoulos.
