He hasnt been showing any progress these past few seasons. Maybe he needs to gain more muscles so he doesnt get shrugged off the ball as easilly. But he still messes up occasionally an easy pass, he tends to switch off during games and we lose control in the middle. Im not sure he has potential for more.

I know they had to go wide offensively with Genoa's defense, but don't like him and Rabiot as central mids for creating. Though Arthur hasn't shown much and can Ramsey be effective there? Maybe try Kulu RM and have McKennie as CM with Rab. or bent when using 4-4-2?

Thought he had a good game. Won the ball back multiple times and made some decent forward passes (one to Cuadrado in the second half was excellent). He's never going to be the most creative like a Pirlo but can develop into a rounded DM.

I think we looked more solid on turnovers with him sitting a bit deeper, which was good to see. Although the real test will be against better teams.

Yeah, that’s bs. He improved every season here. It’s just really boggles my mind.
Dude played as DM and as basically our only midfielder yesterday, because Rabio was doing Rabio things. He lost the ball maybe once on our half and another time when King Stu was chaising him. He also killed anything that Genoa tried to do, was involved in our every attack. He is not even at fault when Genoa scored, it’s more on Weston or Sandro.
So in the game when every other player lost the ball countless of times, even the GOAT himself, and when you one can make argument that our attack sucked (though I don’t think so), TuZ singles out our only DM, defensive midfielder.

We need one top class midfielder who almost cements their place, to give the others a kick up the ass. At the moment they all know that it's a continuous rolling system where they will all get their chance now matter how mediocre their performances.

He breaks up play? That seems to be the only argument that actually holds any weight. I hate to break it to you, but there are many CMs that can break up play from the mighty Genoa all throughout Italy, I mean they are 2nd from last so is it really an achievement to write home about? No. It isn't.

Overall, he is a rotational level player and nothing more. It's not anything to get angry about.

No one is saying he doesn't work hard. We all appreciate his effort. But its time to upgrade to players that still provide high levels of effort but more to the overall team play.

I too think he's been underwhelming this season. However, I think it has more to do with tactics and his position in the team.
We were noticing only Bentancur's good side with Pjanic responsible for all the passing around and playmaking. Last year Sarri got a lot out of Bentancur, and the kid repaid Sarri by being our top assist man in serie A and playing further up the pitch.

This year Pirlo is giving him different responsibilities. He started 9 matches. Once with Artur as his midfield partner, four times with Rabiot, twice with Artur and McKennie, once with McKennie, and once (yesterday) with Rabiot and McKennie.
In 6 of these 9 starts, he played with Rabiot and/or McKennie, and that was a new position and different responsibilities for him compared to those he had with Pjanic in the team. It's not that he was shining when partnered with Artur, far from it actually, but we're talking about 154 minutes of those two playing together in serie A and 82 minutes in CL. That's a total of 236 minutes, or two and a half matches.

My criticism last year was I wanted him to take more risks in attack. If he took more risks I'd be more than happy to justify losing possession in the final third if it meant any of our midfielders would at least "try". I would actually defend our midfielders if they had the courage to take the ball and run at a defense.

I was hoping, in theory, that under Sarri we would see a growth boom in Bentancur's offensive contribution but we haven't seen an improvement at all in his shooting, for example.
