it was probably a joint decision between Del Neri and Marotta since they worked with him at sampdoria and Juve needed a left back at the time, if my memory serves me right we secured the deal months before he actually made the move by then Del neri had been sacked and Conte was stuck with this shit heap

He played CB the last 4 seasons, so I don't think it was because he doesn't track back. Defensively he's quite solid.
I thought it has happened something different and Conte just wanted to get rid of him, because he had either personal differences with him or he wasn't happy with this transfer, so he made a sign to the Marotta clan, that he wants to have a say in transfer things.
