NUREMBERG, June 25 (Reuters) - FIFA President Sepp Blatter said the referee could have been yellow-carded himself after sending off four players and handing out bookings to eight others in Portugal's World Cup 1-0 win over the Netherlands.

Each team finished with nine men after Russian referee Valentin Ivanov took centre stage in Sunday's second-round match, creating a World Cup finals record for red cards in one match.

"I consider that today the referee was not at the same level as the participants, the players. There could have been a yellow card for the referee," Blatter told Portugal's SIC television channel.

"This was a game of emotion, with exceptional drama in the last instant, with a deserved winner.

"It was a great show with intervention by the referee that was not consistent and (had) lack of fair play by some players."

Though I don't get what business it is of Blatter to talk straight to the press about these problems rather than shutting up and actively dealing with them within the administration of the organization.

Yeah, it's purely pandering to the press. The ref last night was okay - the players were a disgrace.

Depends on what you expect. If that had been an Ireland-Australia game people would be all over, praising the fighting spirit that's so traditional for those teams.

Why the heck is Blatter taking these comments to the press??

Jeez, FIFA shouldn't make comments on matches, players or refs. Do it internally, FFS.

How the hell did an ignorant, careless and arrogant fool like him get such a position? A disgrace for football.

Nepotism, quite simply...
Wikipedia
Nepotism means favoring relatives or personal friends because of their relationship rather than because of their abilities. The word is generally used in a derogatory sense.

For example, if a manager employed or promoted a relative rather than a more qualified non-relative, that manager would be guilty of nepotism. Some biologists have suggested that a tendency towards nepotism is instinctive, a form of kin selection.
:D

Was Joao Havelange as bad as Blatter? I can't remember good or bad actions by the Belgo-Brazilian
btw, did you know that Joao's real name was Jean-Marie Faustin Godefroid de Havelange?

I have never seen a player in an Ireland jersey try (much less get away with) a tackle like the one on Ronaldo. I've never seen an Irish player headbutt someone (unlike luminaries of the game like Figo and Zidane). I've only ever seen Duff dive quite like those two last night. There's a difference between fighting spirit and fighting. If I want to see players acting like last night, I'll watch a Gaelic football match.

I'm sure it's happened. I do think the common expectations surrounding teams has a big influence on how they are judged in different matches.

That name is cool, I want it. Erik Faustin Godefroid de Havelange. Any French translation to "Erik"?

When you say things like this straight to the press, it can have a greater, more direct pressure on the person or persons rather than just telling them internally.

It puts public and private stresses on them to get it right rather than just private.

Yeah, but the employer shouldn't bring these internal question to the public.
Blatter should back his refs. That's the least he can do.

Now he's just acting like a supporter, like you and me. He's the boss ffs, in the end it's his fault if the refs suck

Not necissarily, how can it be his fault the refs were douche bags?

That is like saying that it would be his fault if Markus Merk killed Clint Dempsey in a match. He has no power over what they do in the matches. They are grown referees and need to be held accountable for their own actions.
