is that a cooking show? so now you're saying that all programs that somehow reflect reality are reality shows?

where does a show become "reality" and stop becoming a game show, a competition show, etc?
that's self evident. it becomes a reality show when it has no point to it. like big brother. sit in a bunker and wait.

paradoxically enough, the "reality" classification became a hype and resulted in shows that did have a point to label themselves such

A show can only be classified as a reality show if the people in it weren't aware of the cameras then again that could be classified as a voyueristic show instead.

I think some reality tv might be alright, but thus far I haven't watched anything that I remotely liked.

but take "last man standing" for example-
6 athletes who specialise in different sports(boxer, rugby player, footballer, modern pentathlete, wrestler and kite surfer) travel the globe and spend a week living with remote tribesmen while they learn the skills required to participate in their chosen sport(kushi wrestling, water buffalo racing,etc...)they then compete with the locals to see who is the best athlete.

now this show treads a fine line between being a reality show and a competition, i suppose it depends on your outlook.

while i agree that big brother is pointless,it was interesting as a social experiment! that was before it became a vehicle for talentless wannabes to get their 15 minutes and became trash-tv.

Actually my response wasn't quite so serious, it was the standard one liner. But I wouldn't call this a reality show as such simply because these kinds of shows were around before the "reality" concept was invented. So you can't really lump them in with this "new revelation" can you.

Well, I don't deny that it could have been an interesting anthropological experiment, but everything about the way that it was set up (sensationalist to the last) sort of defeated that option, at least to me. I could in principle accept such a show (not to imply it would be interesting) if they had some concrete concept in mind. A lot of shows have been made about so called reality based on specific living conditions. But what really is the point of watching people in a de facto interrogation bunker? Do we not have enough regular reality experience in life as it is?

What social experiment? You put 15 people in one house and let them know that they are being watched by millions. I'd say the outcome is rather predictable.

it's cool i don't really have an argument, just bored and wanting to stoke up some discussion

the first series in britain was rather inetresting as i doubt anyone really knew how big it was going to be. the backstabbing, bitching and everything that happened in the house had a much bigger impact than people insid ethe house realized.

since then it has been the usual freak show procession of wannabes
